The Argentina international was forced to settle for a bit-part role with the Reds last season under former manager Kenny Dalglish. But the 31-year-old midfielder impressed when given the chance and his style of play would appear to suit the fluid approach that Rodgers implemented at Swansea last season. The problem could be that Maxi is unsettled on Merseyside and is believed to be keen to return to Argentina, with the club where he started his career, Newell's Old Boys, a likely destination. While acknowledging that is an issue, Rodgers has stressed that Maxi would have a role to play if he elected to stay at Liverpool. "I would love to have him here as he is a very good player and would be very good for our squad," said the 39-year-old boss. "He will understand 120 per cent about the way I want us to play. But sometimes there are issues. It has been difficult for his family. "I have had a couple of really good conversations with him. It was difficult for him last season. He probably felt he should have played more."
The guy's been a servent and a better ambassador for Argentine players than Tevez & Macherano ever were, if he does want to go, i'd wish him all the best
two thoughts from me. 1. he's got the intelligence to play the rodgers way and experience in 4-3-3s he knows where he needs to be on the pitch. 2. he's not got the legs to play a chasing, pressing game.
I find that Maxi can often go missing in games as well. If things don't go our way, he's not the sort of person who can grab the game by the scruff of the neck nor will he fight for the ball. However, if the team is playing well and it all clicks, he can be a useful part in the team.
good point. certainly when guys are getting the ball in there he knows exactly where to be to join the back stick and get goals. good player but not a fighter
I saw Maxi play centre midfield for Argentina at the world cup in a similar system to what rogers likes. He was fantastic. I feel he could do that job for us now. please log in to view this image
Agreed I really would have liked to have seen a bit more of him last year and as much as I'm not sure he has the legs for an intense pressing game (as Mito rightly points out) but at 31 i would be quite happy to still have him as part of the squad as he's definitely got the touch, vision and also he seems to just be one of those "right place right time" players in and around the box. If he goes though I will wish him all the best
Not worth the annual £4.7 million salary he is reportedly on, so for me he has to be sold. Probably the same for Joe Cole and possibly Aquilani too
I suspect if we had the money he wouldn't be part of BR's plan but whatever money he has from FSG is earmarked already.
I guess that would depend how much BR thinks he can use him. Personally I think I'd rather he stayed and we shifted Cole or Aqua on (or both) simply because I think he's earned it more than them. Again though if he wanted to return to Argentina then good luck to him and we may be no worse off keeping Joe Cole who could possibly still have a bit more fight in him than a homesick Maxi.
