As much as I'd love to see us playing with two full-backs bombing down the flanks and taking people on, I think they might be a little pre-occupied with all the defending they'll have to be doing this season. When we come up against the likes of Bale, Hazard and Silva, I'd much rather see an experienced defender with a cool head up against them.

Would be a pretty major overhaul of our style to keep them at home, though; don't expect the fullbacks, whoever they are, to be running roughshod on the flanks, but we relied on their crossing rather heavily and the outlet they provided wide, and that left us exposed on the counter even in the Championship. We're going to need players out there who can provide some support out there while still having the ability to recover...a cool head didn't do us a hell of a lot of good on the occasions when they were caught upfield with fast wingers behind.

You need more than pace. I believe that Richardson would be far better with his positioning and is probably a better tackler as well. I suspect that Clyne would be a little naive. Besides, Richardson just had a great season and he deserves to play. Clyne will be a great player one day, and he should be a good asset for the squad.

Anyway - how did we get this far without a YouTube video?

(I advise muting the awful music though)

You absolutely need more than pace. But you also need some pace, and Richardson is lacking in that department. He's still certainly an asset himself, and I wouldn't expect (nor want) him to be jettisoned, but Clyne is the sort of back that we're going to want as this team develops, if we want to still play the sort of attacking football to which we have become accustomed.

Joe, be honest, you don't know any more about Clyne than any of the rest of us. If Adkins and co think he's our man then I'm perfectly happy to have him, and some of the qualities highlighted by that video would be very welcome indeed.

Exactly, no one knows how good he will be in the Prem, because he's never played at this level. But we do know that you get very few defenders as young as him in this division, especially at teams who are expected to be near the bottom.

Like Naughton and Bennett or the Spanish guy they had from Liverpool (sorry name escapes me) last year at Norwich? Or Neil Taylor and Steven Caulker at Swansea?

You could say the same about most of our squad, but if you're going to have players with no premier league experience, then the championship team of year isn't a bad place to get them from.

Also for everyone getting excited over Michu, why would he come to Saints? He had a very good season last year and with such a low release clause he will probably end up at a Europa League Spanish side or a more established top flight team in another country

The vision.. He can be part of it.

Naughton's a couple of years older than Clyne. If it's Ryan Bennett you're talking about, he's only played 8 times for Norwich and went on loan to Peterborough. Ayala played 7 games (and looks pretty poor to me as well). Taylor is 23. Caulker, yeah fair enough.

That's one then.

But most of them are older aren't they. The rest of our defenders are pretty experienced.

Bennett was bought from Peterborough, played 8 times then was loaned back for the last few games of the season. Taylor was 22 at the start of last season and so was Naughton both with very little/no Prem experience. At the end of the day Richardson was very good last season, Butterfield wasn't. If we signed Clyne, based on what I've seen, he would probably become first choice, and Richardson would be a decent back up.

I agree that Clyne will be a good addition and that Butterfield's past it. Where we differ is that I believe that Clyne will be eased into the team rather than thrown straight in.

Richardson isn't that slow.
I honestly don't know where this myth started. Yes he is slow compared to Clyne but so are a lot of people. I dont recall him being done for pace every week by a stream of left wingers or failing to join attacks and offer an overlap to RM.
In terms of strength Richardson is probably one of the toughest at the club and dominates Clyne. I would say at this stage they are even
Competition for places. Did Clyne depose Butterfield at Palace?

Anyone think Buttner deal still alive. A while ago it was down to a medical with everything agreed. Then a third party got involved, but according to agent this was resolved days ago. Surely, if we were going ahead with this, something would have happened by now.
