I wouldn't hold it against him for going, the guy deserves a crack at the CL, but I just figured if he can't get that from his new club, then what is the point in leaving? Arsenal are interested apparently so I would just hope he holds out for that move rather than settling for Liverpool. Say Liverpool qualify for the CL in two/three years. There is no guarantee that Dempsey would even be there, let alone getting many games.
Could be a sensible signing for the future. I would expect Jol to use him much as he did Sa, in a support role and see if he can make the grade.
Agreed. Seen a few reports this morning linking us to Kenwyne Jones at Stoke. There seems to be a lot of reports linking us to decent back up strikers, but none I would be happy starting with week in week out. We need a striker that could get us 15-20 goals, such as Carroll or Yilmaz, not decent back ups who would do well to get double figures (Rodallega, Jones, Velikonja)
Thanks for the responses guys. I have to say I'd rather have Dembele myself. But, Dempsey makes a lot of sense - he's cheap, experienced, quite technical, gets the ball over the line. The cynic in me says that it wouldn't be surprising if the AMERICAN owners signed the AMERICAN star player right before our AMERICAN tour to sell lots of merchandise in AMERICA.
Ahh clubs aren't THAT fickle. It was just a coincidence QPR signed Park Ji-Sung before their trip to Asia, right?
Sky say he's signed a 4 year deal with Cardiff. Ah, don't you just love the transfer window !!! http://m.skysports.com/article/football/yourclub/7891492?compid=416&teamid=202
I actually believe the stories about Pog. His agent came out and admitted that he moved to Reading for the money. We offered £35K p/w and Reading are believed to have offered almost twice as much. If Reading are paying him anything under £50K p/w I think we may have stretched to that, but the club cancelled negotiations instantly, which leads me to believe it was a ridiculous amount of money on the table from Reading.
I don't know what to believe, but I think the length of the contract was a big part too. His at Reading is 3/4 years? I don't think we offered him any more than 1 or 2.
And the £1m which his Agent wanted (remember Pog was a free agent and could ask for a signing-on fee) and Reading paid. As I mentioned somewhere else there is no way MAF would countenance that
Rodallega signs 3 year contract subject to work permit. Scores with left foot, right foot and headers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkuF9GbTuio
I don't know about y'all, but I was kind of thinking of money in for Clint, not money out. For Carroll? http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jul/12/fulham-clint-dempsey-liverpool-andy-carroll
We wouldn't gain any money, we'd gain Carroll and lose £9m. No thanks. We should be trying to hold onto him, not nudging him out of the door to get Andy Carroll in, IMO.
Putting my Chief Exec hat on, it would be a jolly good deal. L'pool value Carrol at £20m (which is a huge drop but a hit they seem prepared to take) which means we're getting £11m for Demps. Also in a years time if Demps stays we get zilch if he moves. Assuming Carroll comes on a 3 year deal, if he moves next year - who knows but can't see it being at a loss and it could be a whacking profit given his age. Putting my Jol hat on, well strenghtens my squad and gives me options. And there will be real competition for places. Dressing room rumbles? Nah, doesn't bother me! Putting my Fan's hat on - Noooo If it's a true story, I actually think it's an extremely good tactic by the Club. Instead of haggling with L'pool over a value for Demps only, where we are on the defensive. This way we're attacking and it puts the ball in their court.
I take your point, but it depends if Liverpool are actually enquiring about Dempsey. If they're not really sniffing around, I don't like the idea of offering Demps as a makeweight in a deal for Carroll.
Oh, they're definitely in for him Bidley and have made two specific enquiries. Apparently the first for £6m and told, no then a second for £7.5m and told we wanted at least £10m.
I just can't see that we could afford Carroll's wages, and I'd doubt if he would take a drop. So my thoughts this is a non starter. More likely to be some one like Adam in a swap, but again wages would be a problem. Plus I think Adam is like Bullard in that he doesn't follow instructions and disrupts tactics.
