Hughes could install Park as QPR captain

New signing Park Ji-sung could take over as QPR skipper.

Joey Barton will be suspended for the first 12 matches of the season and has been stripped of the club captaincy for his violent outburst against Manchester City on the final day of last term.

And manager Mark Hughes is considering giving the armband to South Korean star Park, whose move from Manchester United was confirmed on Monday.

Hughes said: “It’s not something I’ve thought about too much, but certainly Ji will come into my thinking in terms of a captain of the club.

“I’ll have to see who steps up and who has the natural fit for it. I’m sure people will want the role and will want to show me that they’re the right person for the job.

The last paragraph is quite crucial - with not too many stand out players who will be near guaranteed a starting place, the one that gets it could be the one that wants it most.

That in itself would be a good quality to show.

I always thought Mackie would be an ideal QPR captain. He seems to get a bad press on here though. It seems that no matter what he has done it is still not good enough for some. He will be one of those players that achieve legendary status once he has finished playing. With the signing of Park, I can see him taking over Jamie's berth, so it would seem to make sense in making him captain. Probably part of the deal of him signing and appeal to our new global support.

The only doubt I have is that he seems to be the one dropped to make room for anyone else.

I do believe that his hard work and application can, with coaching, bring him to the next level and then he can secure that first team place permanently and step up to attain that legendary status.

I hope so Matt, he is like our raw version of Stevie Gerrard. Without Jamie we would not be where we are today. He is Mr QPR and almost single handedly changed our season for us to still talk about us being a Premiership side. Without him, we would be back in the championship. Of that I have no doubt.

Agreed 9s - he has that knack of putting in a performance and goals when we need them the most. He plays for the shirt, badge, club and fans and that's why he's so popular - he's one of us (not seen the like since Gallen and Bircham).
