BR knew what the deal was with Swansea, and presumably thought the player, or more likely his agent, was taking the piss because he was now going to a "bigger" club. I believe he did the right thing if he thought Gylfi was good, but not good enough to be gazumped over.
If we set a precedent, perhaps others will think twice about it in future, though I don't hold out too much hope whilst there are others willing to step in and pay more.
If you go to buy say,a new car, the price doesn't change according to your income.
I know football doesn't work that way, but there is an international financial crisis which footballers appear not to have noticed. Entire countries risk going down the pan, yet still football carries on as though nothing is happening, and fans, desperate for success, seem happy for their clubs to throw away large sums of money in a climate of uncertainty.
Having lauded FSG for getting the debt off the club's back, we shouldn't be getting on their backs for being prudent. If they're being cheapskates that's a different matter, but we don't know that yet and I will reserve judgement for a while.

I kinda like that they your lot told him to get lost, clearly he was trying to take advantage of the change of club. I don't suppose he will give a **** though, Spurs had a better last season and imo have a better chance of making the Champs League than Liverpool.

Its a shame how easy it is for players to demand higher wages.

It's easy based on the fact that Swansea have very little money and so therefore pay very **** money by premier league rates. If he'd have gone to Swansea he'd have been one of their best paid players. On the same money at Liverpool he'd have been one of their worst paid players and quite frainkly why should he be as a new signing? Simple really, it's quite natural he'd want more money to play for Liverpool as they pay more.

    Cars don't earn wages.

That may depend upon what the cars are built and used for!

if you have access, take a look at the major US investment banks early advice notices. It's the 5 year no dividend Class A , clause they don't like associated with the limitation. They also comment upon the debt level itself.

Don't bother me as I'm not even considering an investment <ok>

Brenda put his foot down, respect to that. You need a strong manager in this uncertain financial climate. It makes me laugh the Arsenal fans slagging of Wenger again, the man is a genius, buy a young player, sell him for a premium a few years later, then use the money to buy a young player. Repeat x 50.

Wenger runs that club like a professor of economics but still comes in for stick every year from deluded Gunners fans. I think they put something into the water in London.

Perhaps. What would you pay the car in? Diesel snacks?

The point is the fee for the metaphorical car was the same, it's the wages that changed and he is entirely within his rights to expect to earn more playing for Liverpool than he was Swansea. Pretty obvious really.

To be fair Ruffian the car metaphor was a little stretched. As far as LFC were concerned he had a value but his demands exceeded that value - hence end of story. He found another club who were prepared to pay what he wanted so good luck to him. But it's nowhere near the end of the world for us.

I think that this Summer will see a large number of transfers that are either missed or delayed ebfore players and agents learn that this economic circumstances have changed. Take Cole as an example. I'm sure Lille would have negotiated as transfer with us but were not prepared to pay his wages.

    Hmm.
I think you took the car analogy too literally. Thereby completely missing the point.

Of course, I forgot I'm on the "banter" thread, where discussion plays second fiddle to argument.
thanks for reminding me, dave , why I don't venture on here too often.:)

    You're welcome saint.

But you have to remember that it was Ruffian's metaphor so I was only pulling his chain a little 'cos he's a good lad. Now if it was Matth it would have been far more vitriolic - but then I don't think Matth could have come up with the metaphor in the first place!

I think I mentioned it first, I used it in an analogy about Gylfi gazumping us over his wages. I should have used an example of a service bought rather than a commodity in order to avoid the misunderstanding.

Yeah. and this is Liverpool prerogative of course. I was only making a point to those suggesting he was in someway greedy for expecting more money to play for Liverpool. He isn't, he was asking for his market value at a club of a higher stature. Rodgers will need to understand that fairly quick, that he won't get players in on Swansea wages. The same will apply to Borini. It didn't miss the point Saint, it was just you used a crap metaphor. <ok>

He would've got him had Spurs not come in for him at the last minute. So I really do not think that is true.

I think you're wrong Ruffian, naturally about "a club of higher stature" and of Rodgers understanding of value. It matters not what a player values themselves at. It is the value to the club that is the major determinant and that I believe Rodgers understands only too well.

Agreed. See Pogba, Nasri and Fryers for recent examples of Man Utd and Ferguson not being willing to pay what others teams were offering for them. Odd how that made them greedy in the eyes of Man Utd fans yet Sigurdsson isn't greedy.
