By Michael Wade | Saturday, July 7, 2012 Marc Bircham has told talkSPORT that QPR’s summer spending spree isn’t over yet. Since sealing Premier League survival on the last day of the season manager Mark Hughes has set about making sure they don’t struggle against relegation this time around. He has already completed the signings of Robert Green, Ryan Nelsen, Andy Johnson and Samba Diakite while Manchester United defender Fabio has arrived on a season-long loan and his Old Trafford teammate Park Ji-sung is poised to be unveiled as a Rangers player imminently. But Bircham insists there could be more ‘marquee signings’ made before the start of the new season as the Loftus Road side ushers in an exciting new era. “[Park] is one of a number of big-name targets that we are looking at,” Bircham said. “He will just be one of them and hopefully the gaffer can get one or two in and that adds to the squad that we’ve got. “This is a great chance in the Premier League [for QPR]. I think last year was all about survival. The gaffer came in and had to keep us in the Premier League but now it is a building block. “We’ve got planning permission for the new training ground and there was talk about a new stadium. As a QPR player and fan for so many years this is probably the brightest our future has looked. “The gaffer has used his links to Man United and I think there will be a couple of marquee signings made before the start of the season.” Listen to the full interview here: http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-news/football/premier-league/transfer-rumours/120707/exclusive-bircham-there-will-be-couple-more-marquee-signings
Don't understand this stuff about MH's 'Man utd connections'. Surely they don't have much time for us after the last game of the season?
Am I wrong to want to turn my nose up if we look at signing Berbatov? If the Manchester United connection is where the marquee signings will come from, that is. I hope it'll be another 2 of his former players that we bring in - the long touted Samba and Hoillett for me.
Didn't realise you'd made what we'd all call a 'marquee signing' yet. At any rate, this is a risky policy to adapt. Park for instance may have come from United, but he'll be on a good salary at QPR, 31, no re-sale value, and his biggest strength is his stamina - which is good in a very talented United side but will it make the difference for QPR?
Hoillett is probably moving to a big German club or a big club in England. Samba must be on astronomical wages in Russia, he's playing for Anzhi after all.
If Samba's unhappy, as I understand he is, he'll take wage cut to come home. I doubt he'd lose much. Our owners are prudent spenders but hardly skinflints.
True, and he's only 6 months into a four year contract. But if he's constantly being singled out for racist abuse, however strong a character he is, he'll be unhappy and it's possible Anzhi may look to cut their losses
Id love that but I dont see the club wanting to make much of a loss and I believe they overpaid for him too. I think £6m and 50k/week is reasonable but Id tell them to do one if it was £10m and 90k.
I don't for a minute believe the figures bandied about by Blackburn when they sold Samba in January. £12 million? Don't think so. My guess is they recieved something in the region of £8 mill, the same as we were willing to pay, but desperately didn't want to sell to a rival which is fair enough. They might even have sold him for less just so that he didn't end up with us. The high fee they said they got was only to appease their increasingly frustrated fanbase imo.
Quite right Bircham is a long standing fan. He's made a living from the club for long enough. I don't trust anything he says since he broke the club 'no comment' embargo to talk up Barton after the City game.
I have to say that i am waiting patiently for our one Marquee signing. Although the current English No2 keeper must be considered an important signing, I really don't consider AJ, SD or Fabio to be considered as Marquee signings. If we are to make a MARQUEE signing then i pray to God it's a top class CB.
It won't be Samba unless it's a loan deal as he cannot sign for three different clubs within a 12 month period...
You can get special dispensation from UEFA and i think getting away from racist abuse is a pretty good reason. If that fails, we cant even loan his as that counts as a 3rd club.
I've found it hard to trust him ever since he admitted on live radio that he teaches kids in his Soccer camps how to cheat.
I think Samba will come back to the UK. There's no way he wants to spend his best years in Russia. I suspect he went in January to Anzhi just to secure enough money for the house extension and loft conversion And will be back in the big league now his spell is up
