The best centre-half in the league? He's capable of playing very well but capable of absolute stinkers too, getting owned by Bobby Zamora of all people.

What are you talking about?? Koscielney gets WAY too much unwarranted praise on here. A defenders job is primarily to stop the opposition from scoring - He's not very good at this! Good player - AVERAGE DEFENDER. I posted this on the other thread but... As an experienced strength and conditioning coach it amazes me that Koscielney is playing as a centreback. He does not have the right physique for the job. Also those who are claiming he is the 'best defender in the league' whilst completely ignoring our terrible goals conceded ratio are ****ing insaine. He's not entirely to blame but he plays a large part (as our most capped defender during this period). Being Good on the ball and making a great 'recovery tackle' does NOT make you a good defender. Stopping the opposition from scoring is generally the key here. Vermalen has had a poor run of form but he is still far and away our best Centreback. The fact is that Koscielney has played the MOST games (mainly due to injuries) out of all our defenders over the last two Seasons and both have been disastrous in terms of goals conceded. (I dont just blame him mind you) 2010/2011- 44 League Goals conceded 2011/2012 - 49 League Goals conceded I think if you ask most neutral fans would pick Vermaelen to play for their team over Koscielney. The reason for that is the Frenchman is actually a fairly poor defender. A good technical player but lacks the key attributes of the world best centrebacks. If you were to write down the key ingredients of what makes the likes of Tony Adams a great defender it would be something like this... 1. Leadership 2. Positional awareness 3. Physical strength 4. Aggression 5. Aerial Ability Vermaelen is better than Koscielney in pretty much all those areas. Koscielney has alot of pace and makes a fantastic recovery tackle (normally because he is out of position in the first place) mind you but he is not and never will be 'World Class' defender. I've also maintained that I think Koscielney would be a better DM than he is CB. Kompany and Vidic are easily the best defenders in the league.
You keep bringing this up but being a strength and conditioning coach does not make you and expert about Centrebacks or defending for that matter , there's far more to defending than just strength and conditioning. Below is a quote from the Arsenal website: Koscielny was on the pitch for a total of 3,630 minutes (60 and a half hours), and Arsenal conceded once every 75.63 minutes on average with him in the side. This compares favourably to once every 64.74 minutes without him in the team. and if you take into account that he has had several partners and there records for goals conceded are far worse: These stats are for Arsenal.com so your claims that Vermaelen and Mert being far better is clearly wrong
