Although he´s had rest physically Some mental torment he´s had too, Since last season ended in glee For the number 9 of our crew, But now that it´s settled at last And he´s here to stay for some more, We can hope for more blasts from the past As he leads our troops into war, But if, as in seasons gone by He is slow to get into gear, I hope no derisory cries Will be voiced at his extra year, For no-one knows the ins and outs Nor what was said on either side, But none here can have any doubts That our City fills him with pride, And I know for sure, in my mind Had he gone, the millions received, Would still have made it hard to find Anyone as prepared to bleed, Canary blood for our good cause As Mr. G. Holt has, to date, So thanks for keeping him indoors Personally, it was well worth the wait, And barrel-chested as he is If he should get some flak, I´m sure, He won´t get in much of a tizz Nor end up in a sour humour, So here´s looking forward, again To him topping his 15 goals, From last year, and causing a pain To defences where there are holes. OTBC I´d rather have him playing for us, than against us, that´s for sure!
Super - whether he´s 31, 32 or 35, I can still see him causing havoc to any defence around, so I´m very pleased with the outcome.
true. i've always likened him to dean ashton but i think teddy sheringham is another who we can compare him to. never had blistering pace but his brain works quicker than most people can run
Hi RBF, bang on the money again, I feel a bit sorry for him, he acted badly, but I'm sure it was from poor advice. Supers, he is actually quite a bit pacier than he first appears, allbeit over a shorter distance! It's amazing how often an attack breaks down and we're hit on the break, and there's Holty in our box, clearing the danger!
Dave - I´m sure things have been said on both sides which they, on hindsight, probably wish hadn´t been said, but I will always maintain that this outcome is the best, by far, for the club. I can still see him getting plenty of flak from a certain section of supporters though, but I fancy he´s man enough to be able to take it.
i know dave - he does have a decent turn of pace, more than most would appreciate, but he's far from blistering! its his strength which helps when on the run. as you say, great defensively too.
Hi RBF bor, give the old man a break, thanks for the sentiment. I need it. LOL. Every time a player is signed it is a gamble. City thought Holty's third year was a gamble, hence the expression "too old." I don't think whoever made that remark took into consideration Holty's stamina and physic. I think barring accidents he will be ok. Even if not we will still have had a better bargain than the gamble made when we signed Vaughan. We have yet to see a return on that investment. Some fans have taken the mercenary view that we should have cashed in. We would have capitalised on the sum we paid for him plus getting the benefit of his playing ability, but how much would it cost to replace him. That profit would be swallowed up by a suitable replacement, unless of course we can find a gem in the lower leagues. But even then the figure quoted is getting ridiculously high. Holty is synonimous with Norwich. Even in the backwater areas of football like QPR and West Ham they rate him, our country cousins hoped he would leave us but only because they wished they could afford him. Give my regards to Rex, Long may he reign !!!
the good thing is, rather than two months to find a long term replacement for holt, we now have three years
NORKIE bor, I note your profile age has increased by a year, many happy returns for whenever that happened! Don't forget, you're now old enough to know better!
Hi Dave, yep getting on a bit now, now old enough to know better . . . always willing to learn from my betters LOL.
I sometimes wonder if Paul Lambert's somewhat "barbed" appreciation of GH at the club end-of-season dinner played any part in all this. He drew an analogy with John Hartson in his final years at Celtic: 4 stone overweight but kept scoring; couldn't be left out ........ Ouch! I thought at the time that several of PL's jocular remarks were not as jokey as they purported to be. Looking back, I think it was the performance of someone who knew he was on the way.
More apt would probably be that "We'd rather he was inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in!"
It wasn't so long ago that some of you budgies actually thought the same thing! How fickle the budgies are....!
I think you'll find it's a natural reaction! Look at how many Leeds fans said Johnson was no good, and laughed how we'd been ripped off over Jonny Howson!
warky, i remember full well ipswich fans labelling connor wickham as the best young talent in the country when he played for you. the day he was sold i read the same fans saying he was overhyped and you'd ripped sunderland off and that he would fail. happens all the time when you're hurting...
