Chelsea is the problem Roo..thats why their manager opinions are null and void for me....had Villas Boas turned up for us last year everyone would have been creaming themselves because quite frankly he was the hottest property in world football and Mourinhio's disciple....as if 7 months at a classless club run by a racist and his hood is going to change that for me.
I'm quietly excited by this - yes he did dire at Chelsea but he was given the impossible job of breaking up the old guard, winning everything and doing it all 2 seasons ago. At Spurs he might get a bit more leeway - and if it does start off a bit rough - the overall expectation for AVB is kinda low so that'll probably help him (plus you never know (shock news) this deal might work). I'm of a 'wait and see' attitude but also think he could work well with us. Plus we might finally have a decent scout!
I'm a believer in trying the best young manager, so I like this move. It is bold, which is good, AVB will play Spurs football, which is better, and adding spice to the Chelsea game is a plus as well. (Meanwhile, how long can ANY Chelsea manager last? And who will be the next Chelsea manager--Could it be someone who's currently out of work, would prefer to stay in London, likes older players....) Another plus is that between Redknapp leaving and Bale staying, there may be a trend towards rewarding loyalty, and sending the ambivalent packing. I hope this will work...
Do you think we will sign Hulk, now? If not, do you think that Wonder Woman would be a viable alternative?
We certainly stand a better chance now. I just hope we don't go after daniel sturridge. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a good player, but we need to get an outstanding marquee striker or 2, not someone who's just.. "pretty good". - we've got Defoe in that category, who got 17 odd for us last season. (Defoe haters, insert your opposing comments below...)
Sturridge seems absolutely perfect for us not to get: a talented dribbler who either doesn't know how to pass or doesn't want to. I'm hoping we re-sign Ade somehow because Spurs need a striker who holds the ball up, passes and runs well, and they're not easy to find.
Llorente? Also, I kept hearing that AVB had been personally scouting in South America a month or 2 ago - perhaps our chances with Damiao have improved.
I welcome the appointment. AVB stumbled at Chelsea because he wanted them to play attractive football and his brief to marginalise the senior players (surely on the instructions of the Russian) backfired and caused Roman to turn on him. The way I see it, we will continue to play exciting football, but the players will actually receive some tactical instruction and coaching, something sorely lacking in HRs locker. The job title "Head Coach" says it all for me. Onwards and (hopefully) upwards... COYS
I'm happy with the AVB appointment, I always back an underdog to do well and AVB is just that at the moment. I just hope that getting a new manager doesn't completely change our transfer targets, Adebayor, Damiao and Vertonghen need to be secured ASAP.
RWAEB - following on from your Ade point, we also need Ade to give us some continuity next season. It's all well and good having a new manager with new targets in mind, but a team cannot be disrupted too much. Pav//Bentley/dosantos/F. Campbell etc. sound familiar? some additions we make are likely to slot straight in. Vertonghen (the legacy of) being one of them. Modric's replacement likely to be another, and perhaps a goalkeeper. - although Brad does not deserve to lose his place, IMO. But we'll obviously be bringing youth through. Other than that, we cant afford to mix things up straight away. 3 changes will already make a difference to the team, especially with a new goalkeeper as confidence throughout the team is often triggered from the hands of a steady keeper. Moorph, Llorente is very unlikely now. we've missed our chance with him. he's going to be too expensive. would be lovely though. I think Moutinho is on the cards (whether that's good or not, someone will need to tell me), + 2 other Porto players that AVB is likely to raid. Hulk being one of them, would be very nice indeed.
Not been here for a while! Hello! I wrote an article or two on Spurs monthssss ago! Short Article on Villas Boas -More along the lines of his history and Porto days. For anyone interested ^ Didn't touch too much on his Chelsea days as they've all been well documented.
It wouldn't surprise me if we saw Gomes reclaim the number 1 jersey next season, I imagine he will prefer working under AVB to Redknapp, and AVB showed at Chelsea that he gave the portuguese speakers a chance. http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/story/156486.html
I sincerely hope you're wrong, WY. Can you imagine the onslaught if he played him and Gomes demonstrated his old tricks?! the rival fans would never let us hear then end of it!!
Gomes is out of contract this summer, which means either we bring in a new first-choice keeper (meaning Gomes will be let go), we sign Cudicini to a contract and bring in a long-term prospect (meaning Gomes will be let go), or we sign Gomes to a new two year deal...so we can sell him in January.
so worst case scenario is that we could have Gomes in goal for 6 months if he does the latter? That's 6 months too long
The goalkeeper problem is a difficult one - as has been said, Brad deserves to keep his #1 spot but at the same time, this'll probably be his last season and we might end up in the situation Man Utd found with Van der Sar and de Gea (ok de Gea came ok in the end but still)
Hopefully we can convince him to come and throw in Oscar as well! Brad has done well but we need to seriously consider Lloris imo
I know we are all mixed about the appointment of AVB and who he will sign is exciting etc etc but in my opinion he left Oporto too soon. Yes he won the double but was it just a flash in the pan season? Many posters have said that we need to give Pardew another season before we can fully judge him at Newcastle as they had a bit of an exceptional season last time. It's easy to praise a coach after one good season but for me a coach should be tested over three or four and not just one. It's the same with AVB,he should have stayed to see what he'd have done the season after the double ie Ancelotti at Chelsea. A touch previous imo.
as if anybody can use Chelsea as a man's measure...when AVB left them they were 3 points off 4th....i think the problem was somwhere else....thanks to a bunch of ****s at that club.
