I agree we are not blessed with a lot of pace in defence, and Cuellar wont improve that, but my question to this is simple? How many times was our lack of pace actually exposed last season? Once? Twice at most? Our defence were rock solid imo and the problem was the inability to score goals and create decent chances. Pace, or a lack of it, isnt our Achilles Heel imo. Good solid signing, experienced player and still only 31, on a free? No problem with this at all.
Well, if this is a taste of what's to come, then I'm confident MON means business. Cuella is a quality addition, make no mistake and I'm buzzing now over prospect of who else the gaffer decides to bring in to strengthen our squad.
who would you rather have in the squad. Cuellar or Ringo? ....and who was the last 'quick' centre-half we had? I'm struggling to come up with a name. my glass is defo half-full on this deal. 5 more players required to fill it to the brim.
Good signing. Solid centre back who is very committed when on the field. Can play a bit too. Only time he looks dodgy is when he tries to play full back which he is not suited to. He is ok at right back in times of desperation but never on the left. Obviously Villa turned out to be a very poor move for him in terms of not playing regularly and having to play out of position. I remember when he left Rangers I thought they were getting one hell of a player. Fair enough it was only Scotland but I was very impressed while he was up there. Wasted his peak years at Villa. Still a good age though as only 31 and as far as free's go there won't be many better this summer.
It's a start... Neither here nor there......on this one... An improvement? yes A big step forward?????????????????? He's ok, better than what we have maybe...
If he was the best signing or the only signing then I too not be impressed, however his pedigree is quite good, experienced, comes on a Bosman and reading what Short has said I think there could be more notable signings, imo. Shame to see criticism of MON so soon, forgive me if I appear to be happy clapping.
and I think that is the answer, we cant bring in big money signings in all 5 positions so a solid free or 2 along with 2 or 3 bigger signings, hopefully at least 1 of those will be a goal scorer. Like commo I'm on the fence but the two positives are his name is not Andrews or Bendtner.
I think this means the end for Bramble. We have probably got the most versatile defence in the country: Brown RB/CB OShea RB/CB/LB Kilgallon CB/LB Cuellar RB/CB/LB Happy to keep hold of Turner and Richardson and sign a specialist left back. Then I think defensive recruitment is complete and we can concentrate on the other end of the field as I thought we were very solid defensively under MON last season.
Why was he gettng no game time at a very poor Villa? I'm delighted that most seem pleased, I haven't seen much of him, so know little about him. As for those saying he's only 31 so not too old, bear in mind he's 32 in a few weeks or something. Know it's not much of a difference but it's a difference. But the question remains... Why could he not break into a poor Villa side.
And were Villa any better defensively for not having him in their team? Would Wee Eck have got the sack if he had picked Cuellar more than he did? Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville John Terry, Ashley Cole, Danny Murphy, Scott Parker, Didier Drogba make a mockery of a players age being an argument when he is still right side of 35.
