we need to start winning big time.........doing my nut it.................. Nice little trip to County at the weekend, need to win....
Be honest though bpl, if somebody had offered you scrapping for the playoffs in August, you would have taken it, no?
Took my son to see ManU at Dell. Pleased at time that United won 1.0 because I didn't want to take screaming kid home (any parent would understand). Carried on going and fell in love. I always liken it to Mr Toad in Wind in the Willows who fell in love with a car the first time he saw one..beep, beep. I was soon a real Saints fan and my son followed me soon after. As I was born in Portsmouth, it was a bit of a shock to my family.
Born and bred Southampton, I was only going to support one team. I think I only got in the habit of going regularly from about 10 years ago, and when my Son was old enough, it became something we could share, unlike the bloody shoot-em-um Xbox nonsense in which I have no interest. His first match was a boxing day match against Charlton in the Prem, the dullest nil-nil I have ever seen. He was saying "i'm bored" after the first 10 minutes! But he will always support Saints now, and I am hoping for more good days at St Marys in the next few weeks.
I blame my brother....I was a typical younger sister, I wanted to be where he was! He used to go to the Dell with me in tow, grudgingly I must say. We used to stand behind the goal at the Milton Road end, the atmosphere there was electric and soon had me hooked, although I knew nothing of the rules etc. We moved form Southampton 18 years ago so I then just followed the results but didn't really 'support' them. I went back to watch Saints not long after we moved to SMS against Villa, we were dire :-s but the atmosphere and family feeling, in the chapel end, got me hooked again. So I started courting Saints 25 years ago but only actually fell in love with them ten years ago. Although I must say the 5 hours I used to spend on my 125cc bike to come and watch them did have many questions of my own sanity!!! COYR
1987 home game when Midland Saints Supporters Club organised a tour before the game. I was only 10 but a Saint for 3 years by that point. The game didn't matter but getting the autographs of Le Tiss and Shearer in the Directors Box and the Wallace Brothers (in the back of their car in the car park!) made my day and I still have them today. Favourite first memory at The Dell - Ruddock's pen vs Newcastle (i think in '89). Worst away memory - being at Forest when Le Tiss had the only penalty miss of his career. Best away memory - has to be 2: Cardiff and Delhurst Park First player I ever disliked and still do - Scott Gemmill for scoring deep into Extra Time in the ZDS Cup to deprive us of penalties in my first trip to Wembley! (i have a long memory!!) Lasting memory of The Dell - the sound of the the plastic seats being snapped off and waved in the air in the 2nd half vs Brighton. Still my favourite memory of St Mary's - Le Tiss testimonial watching his goals to Chesney Hawkes "The One and Only". Yes, I absolutely love the Saints!
I remember seeing the penalty save on tv but i thought it was at the dell? not trying to prove you wrong but can someone confirm this as it's like a pub quiz question you can't quite remember.
It was at the Dell against Mark Crossley. I grew up knowing my dad used to go to the Dell and then for my sixth birthday I was taken to see a game. Home to Rotherham and we lost 2-3 I think it was. Not a good season for us and one which we got relegated in. Not a good start but the next year I was given the game against Swindon as my second game and we beat them 3-1 which helped convince my dad that I was allowed to go again. Though a Saints fan since then it wasn't until two years ago that I realised how much the club meant to me. I had taken my then 6yo son to watch us at home to Watford and we were appalling. The atmosphere in the stadium was dire and up to that time we had not been to a game whereby my son had seen us win. At the end of the game I was going to walk away from the club. I was at the lowest point I had ever been. As low as when I last my first wife. Walking away from the ground I was taking my last look at the ground when my son asked, "dad have you forgot, you were going to get me my first Saints shirt?" You can imagine the emotion running through me as I picked him up and hugged him. That day I knew there was no turning away and since that season we have seen Markus arrive with his right hand man and the rest is history. Now every visitor to my house has to do a tour of my boy's room which is a shrine to the Saints and I can honestly say that such thoughts are never ever going to cross my mind again.
What made me fall in love with Pompey, was the lack of any Island mentality, the lovely girls, great beer & pubs near the ground, the greasy burgers and cup of bovril at half time, and the state of the art odour free urinals. I love Fratton Park but most of all my team, who I have followed for many years both home and away. Away matches are always more fun with the cameradery and well behaved fans that we have at the club, and you do not need nose plugs during the game.
my mates were all glory supporters so wanted to follow them but my mum wouldnt let me lmao but wouldnt of wanted to have any other way now lol
Dad never took me to football. My mates dad took me to the Dell about 22 years ago to watch Arsenal and was hooked. Now I have taken my Dad to 3 games at St Marys: 4-3 vs Norwich 1-4 Pompey 1-2 Man Utd He loves it now!
For those who started following Saints since the move to St Marys, I have my sneaking suspicions that the odour of sweet onion around the ground on a match day actually contains an addictive quality, thats why 20,000 come back every week! As well as to admire Fonte's glorious locks whilst indulging themselves on those glorious sweet onion-filled burgers.
