Poll to gauge people's reaction about the swearing of Pepe Reina (not KPR) but the bald Liverpool keeper. please log in to view this image Clearly Martin Atkinson was aware Pepe was swearing at him and yet no punishment from the FA. Also the incident was clearly visible on television and yet still nothing from Soho square despite their Respect campaign. So should Pepe be banned?
Has anybody heard what Paddy Crerand's said about Rooney? That he was actually telling the cameraman to "**** off" because he asked him to kiss the camera? If this is true, he was still daft for giving the FA an excuse to punish us, but I think it's more understandable. As for Reina, he won't be banned. The FA won't even bother to explain why they're being inconsistent. They get more like FIFA all the time.
One of the reasons I was against Rooney being banned as it was purely the result of a witch hunt in a similar style of situation that Eduardo had after he dived against Celtic. There is no strong underlying principle behind it as improper conduct (or whatever Rooney was charged with in the end) is such a loosely defined and liberal law that it can be applied to almost anything. I just wish the F.A wouldn't let themselves be bullied so easily, almost every time there is a media backlash against someone they fall in line with it.
If the FA were serious about stamping out abusive language then yes, he should be banned... but we all know it isn't going to happen, even Joey Barton with his poor reputation won't be banned after clearly being seen on camera in the Villa game screaming "**** off" directly at the ref.
I heard that too. That could be why Sky didn't ask about it in the post match interviews. Rooney was eyeing the cameraman when they were celebrating before the swearing and then appeared to say "****ing what? What? ****ing hell!" Watch it again on here from about 4:45 and you'll see it. http://goalplace.blogspot.com/2011/04/west-ham-2-4-manchester-united.html Lee Mason was a ****ing joke too. He said he's have sent Rooney off for swearing, but if you watch when he gives the penalty against Upson, Upson looks like he swears at the ref then and Mason has to have a word with him to calm him down. But again, no red card.
Don't agree that Rooney was talking to the camera man, although he did say words that could make it seem like that the way he said them was more of letting out feelings of frustration rather than responding to a request from the camera man. The camera man was being a dick though by trying to get him to kiss the camera.
He did definitely say "WHAT?" at one point during his swearing. Hard to imagine he was saying it to the audience at home...
I just thought he was letting out his anger at the people booing him, and because the camera man came up to him that was where Rooney swore at. As I said, I thought the 'WHAT' was more 'what the **** do you think about that' directed at all the people who wanted him to fail rather than 'what were you trying to say'.
What Reina was really saying was 'Nada Fiesta hoy' which means 'No party ok' - I think something must have got lost in translation.....
Maybe, but the "WHAT" definitely sounded more like a direct question to me. I don't think Rooney has the intellectual capacity to use what in that sort of rhetorical way... That's a coincidence. "****" is ancient Norwegian for "Hurray". Rooney's celebration has obviously also been lost in translation!
To be honest, I think the whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. Swearing is part of the game, as long as people use common sense it's not a problem. Rooney was definitely taking a risk blatantly swearing into the camera, but a two game ban is way OTT. Reina's outbust is just part and parcel of every game, not a problem and shouldn't be made into one
I agree. And if it wasn't for the ridiculous Rooney ban you wouldn't have any United fans on here complaining about Reina.
Well if you think that other players are now going to be banned just for swearing because Rooney told the the viewing public to **** off then I ' m sorry but you need to get a grip of reality. Rooney swaers week in week out but for the first time he chose to immediatly apologise for it this time which tells us all that he quickly realised that he'd overstepped the mark on this occasion. Most woudl recognise that I'd hope. I have no issues with Rooney really, I know what you get with him and can readily accept it -he's a working class scouser after all .But I have seen some silly reactions on other forums from some united fans this time who (unlike Rooney himself) don't seem able to differentiate between what he did and the swearing that he and other players do week in week out that goes unpunished. If you swear then you run the risk of the FA charging you, if you do it at an official then you will probably get booked however if you swear direct at a camera at millions of viewers then you leave the FA with no choice but to take further action as the game is then taken into disrepute. Rooney knew that and it as pretty clear to all but those few United fans with rather odd victim mentalities who draw convenient parallels where really things are worlds apart.
What if you swear at a referee in front of millions of viewers? Is that not bringing the game into disrepute? I'm sure all the young players who saw Reina swear at the referee will now have newfound respect for the trainee referees who take control of their games and will be the officials of the future...not. And this is nothing to do with victimisation, it is to do with the blatant inconsistency of the FA. They did not charge Rooney with bringing the game into disrepute, they charged him with "the use of offensive, insulting and/or abusive language". But apparently it's still fine to use offensive language to the referee?! They are applying the rules in a half arsed way, in an attempt to make themselves look good, and meanwhile losing control of the game as a whole - the relaunch of the "respect" campaign has already been blown out of the water by this.
Well the Reina incident took place only a few hours after the Rooney one so if he wasd going to be charged, it would have happened by now. I presume this poll is more about making a point with regards to inconsistency though. From a purely selfish perspective, I'm glad Reina wasn't banned, given that it meant he was available for the City and Arsenal games, both of which Liverpool gaining results in could be seen as beneficial to United.
