  4. Remember the same rumour circulating but have heard no more - and the 'black hole' of any worthwhile info around that lad during his loan period last year was surprising. He looked a really top prospect from what I saw and I was hoping that he might have a future with us.

He looked a really top prospect from what I saw and I was hoping that he might have a future with us. But for info he was in the squad as of June 16th...

"Menezes will announce his final 18-man squad on July 6, meaning that he will have to drop a further 14 players.

    Brazil's 35-man squad:

Goalkeepers: Jefferson (Botafogo), Neto (Fiorentina), Rafael Cabral (Santos), Gabriel (Milan), Renan Ribeiro (Atlético-MG), Diego Alves (Valencia)

Defenders: Danilo (Porto), Dani Alves (Barcelona), Rafael (Manchester United), Alex Sandro (Porto), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Fágner (Vasco), Lucas Mendes (Coritiba), Thiago Silva (Milan), Dedé (Vasco), Marquinhos (Corinthians), David Luiz (Chelsea), Bruno Uvini (São Paulo), Juan (Inter Milan)

Midfielders: Sandro Ranieri (Tottenham), Fernando (Grêmio), Rômulo (Vasco), Casemiro (São Paulo), Lucas Moura (São Paulo), Douglas Costa (Shakhtar Donetsk), Philippe Coutinho (Espanyol), Giuliano (Dnipro), Oscar (Internacional), Paulo Henrique Ganso (Santos)

Forwards: Alexandre Pato (Milan), Neymar (Santos), Leandro Damião (Internacional), Wellington Nem (Fluminense), André Ribeiro (Atlético-MG), Hulk (Porto)"

He's definitely gone, it's just a matter of how much we're getting for him and where he's going.
He's been allowed to leave Mexico's Olympic squad to tie it up and sign the papers.
Almost certainly a move to La Liga, with Sevilla and Atletico Madrid being the main names mentioned.

momentum is really gathering this summer isn't it? players in and out.

    so who does that leave?

    bassong?
    jenas?
    bentley?
    Khumalo?
    Pienaar?
    Bostock?
    Obika?
    Alnwick?
    Gallas perhaps?

good progress so far! just amazed that it's happening now and not at the end of the window like always!

Roo, suspect that NEW manager has told Levy he wants a clean out before he brings in new players.

I wouldn't have thought the manager would care would he, Perryman? he'll just play who he wants.

surely it's levy who'd need to get a move on clearing the players out, in order to free up wages for the new manager?

Khumalo is as good as loaned to PAOK.

Let's get shot of Alnwick and Obika next!

Surely the point of a 25 man squad is to give adequate cover for all positions. So if we were playing 352 we would need more 'centre backs' and if we were playing 4231 we would need more attacking midfield players and fewer strikers, if we were playing 442 we would need more wingers. Indeed, as I have pointed out, we didn't have any decent cover for half the positions in the system we played last year, which is partly why we were so crap when anyone was out and also meant that Harry couldn't rotate (even if he had wanted to).

The Euro's have proved yet again how easy it is for a good side to cope against 442. I really do hope we play something different under the new coach. If we play 4231, then Ade, one new striker and Defoe as an impact sub is plenty of strikers, especially if we also keep Kane for the Europa league.

Power - The Euro's did not prove 442 is a **** system, it proved its a **** system with the wrong personnel, in the wrong match...big difference. I am in total agreement and always have been in our defiencies last season, but a 25 man squad is enough to cover all requirements. You are wrong about a certain preferred formation meaning less players of a type being needed. As I have pointed out, every team around us have 4/5 strikers, if you prefer to go against this basic ethos followed by every worthwhile team in the league, thats up to you. <ok>

Are you Vincent Del Bosque by any chance? :)

Notso I still don't agree. Having Ade, Defoe and one more striker is enough. Coulibaly and Kane as emergency cover. We can't afford to pay high enough wages for people to sit on the bench all season.

No - but I've got a lot of sympathy with his selections. The Spain system depends on keeping the ball, which is why they concede few goals. They also press very high up the pitch. Torres isn't very good at retaining possession so makes the system clunky and Fabregas probably is nearly as good at scoring goals in any case. I suspect David Villa would be in the team, if fit.

I do understand your comments about the squad, but I have always been in favour of picking a system and sticking to it rather than trying to cover all bases. Ideally as a manager I would want two equally good but slightly different players for each position so that I could pick different teams to match the strengths and weaknesses of the opponents. I think we've got a lot of that already for 4231 - eg Huddlestone and Sandro would work well against a team with a slow but skillful midfield but Parker and Livermore better against an energetic one. And I might go with Caulker and Dawson for their height and strength against Carroll or Dzeko, but Vertonghen (hopefully) and Kaboul against Rooney or Van Persie.

Newcastle defeat that imo Canary, sitting on the bench is part of squad life in the PL, used correctly its not an issue. Can't beleive you're saying it, 3 is ridiculous, 2 injury's and we're relying on unproven teenagers, lunacy mate, lunacy. If you can show me when a PL team has attempted a season with just 3 strikers and done well I'd be pleased to see it. I keep saying it, every other team uses 4/5, for a very good reason one would presume, there is no reason whatsover for us to have less imo. You are entitled to your opinion of course, but I don't see the need in going round in circles. <ok>

OK - perhaps we only need one forward having seen Spain tonight.

It does prove that picking your best 10 outfield players can work, whatever 'position' they play. Fabregas is very useful that far upfield: does a lot of damage
