That goddam awful new kit.....

Discussion in 'Southampton' started by St. Luigi Scrosoppi, Jun 29, 2012.

?

What do you think of the new strip

  1. I like it and will buy it.

  2. It will take quite a while for me to get to like it.

  3. Sorry Nicola you got it wrong. I wouldn't be seen dead in it.

Don't get too used to it because there will be a new one next year. Tradition went out the window over 30 years ago and for someone as young as myself, a kit is just a kit. So long as the red and white are still there, which they are, it's still a Saints kit.

Whilst initially a bit disconcerted, I like it. Overall I'd rather have stripes, but I can live with this.

I've always thought stripes were a bit "unfashionable" and when your 10 or 12 years old and choosing which team to support, or in todays Global market living 3000 miles away in another country altogether, stupid things like that can matter. So the marketing men have got hold of it and tried to do something with it, what they have done has been with the best interests of the club at heart. I hope it succeeds although it feels sadly like the passing of an era (well several era's actually!).

Good on you mate, I used to regularly travel down to Saints & Pompey, my dad was born near Southsea, as my grandad was in the forces, so used to make the effort.

I'll be down at St Mary's this season, as it's quicker for me to fly home for the games in the South now, I keep my season ticket , but made 6 home 8 away last season!

Away fans are always made welcome at Sunderland, in every bar in the city <ok>

Not enough white for me. Looks like Liverpool 30 years ago, and I didn`t like them for their `first is first, and second is nowhere` arrogance. Saints play in red and white stripes, and black shorts, that`s our identity.

Did I single you out by name? Or use your quote as a reference? No, I didn't so chill out. It just seemed that anyone who was against the new design was being tarnished as some sort of pathetic 'traditionalist' which is not the case. Just I'd put a new perspective on it, which I still believe to be the case, with "some" people that is (as was the wording in my original statement).

A lot of the time, change is needed for progress - like moving to St Marys . Like Dan said before: bollocks to tradition. The new kit will bring in more money to the club than a kit similar to last seasons (i.e. red and white stripes) would have done. I don't see how the new kit is a bad thing. Tradition will only get you so far.

Blacky, I posted the same as Dan, as you posted "let's face it, you just ....." it was a very tarring brush stroke to those who had said we liked the kit. It read as a sweeping statement. In pretty much the same way you think that anyone against the kit was treated as pathetic traditionalist.

And to be fair, you can't have any grounding for even saying "some" people will like it just becasue it is Southampton.... you have no idea what they are thinking, unless they are all your mates and they have told you. It appears to me, that you don't like the kit and don't like the fact that alot of people do. What I find amazing is that people have moaned about the tradition of the stripes, yet we have come away from it in the past and then gone back to it.

    Some like it

    Some don't like it.

A woman at my last job kept asking me what I thought of Martin O'Neil as a manager. Several times she looked at my Saints team photo, and probably because she was a gooner she would ask me which one was Nicolas Bentdner. I think the combination of Red n White stripes and both clubs beginning with 'S' really threw her.

LOL, think we're in some sort of tug-of-war here FatLeTiss! My initial post was reactionary, just like yours is. I objected to being tarnished as a traditionalist, which I am definitely not. I just wanted to express the fact that I wasn't keen. It seemed to me that it was all those in the 'for' camp who were being overly defensive and only too eager to jump down the throats of those who dared to speak their mind. I guess it all depends on where your stood. I more than respect peoples opinions, like I said, I was just shining a new light on the argument.

Please stop associating me with the word 'tradition', I am defo not one of those.

Ok, do you like Werthers? They are traditional toffees!!!!

By the way... those that dared to speak their minds actually apply to anyone who spoke, either for or against the kit :cheesy:

Was dead against the kit. People banging on about others moaning about change and what is tradition, suppose these peeps cant wait until we wear blue shirts, white shorts and red socks then ;-)

Wish the white stripes were wider (they are not stripes, just a seam) or more reference to white in whatever format (liked the sash and not even averse to the early days red and white quarters).

It does look like a recycled Liverpool kit for those old enough to remember, having said that The CRBA had a similar kit way back when (80s) and I suppose more importantly...striped teams dont seem to win much. So, here's to a more fortuitous future....

Maybe because more clubs have chosen one form of red or another.

Of course not, I just prefer something more traditional. Actually, I quite liked the black away kit from that period.

Ok my official position is that I am not enamoured with the home kit but like the away kit. Issue for me primarily is that the shorts should be black. Would have liked the pinstripe to have been slightly wider but not against a predominantly red kit per se. if I was buying one then it would be the away kit.

Would it be better if we had the white kit as home and the red as the away?
    It would please me.
Maybe we could have both kits randomly at home (prob cos i prefer the white)

Had another look at video and it looks like the GK kit is black, but no clear view to say of it had any other colour on chest.
