That goddam awful new kit.....

Discussion in 'Southampton' started by St. Luigi Scrosoppi, Jun 29, 2012.

?

What do you think of the new strip

  1. I like it and will buy it.

  2. It will take quite a while for me to get to like it.

  3. Sorry Nicola you got it wrong. I wouldn't be seen dead in it.

While some people are being criticised for their fondness for tradition, I also think some are guilty of wearing their rose-tinted specs. Let's face it, you like it only cos of your pride in Southampton. But I honestly can't see what their is to like. It is just plain red. A few stripes that won't be noticeable. There is, ironically, NO design to the new design. It's utterly boring. There are of course, already enough teams wearing plain red! For me, nothing to do with tradition, just completely bored by the new (home) kit already.

Don't mind the kit, but did anyone else notice lallana looking sad in both photos and absent from the saints player video. Not that it's a good reason to be concerned although it does fit in with deleting his twitter account and his fiance cheating on him story. Hope he is all sorted for preseason, he should be in good hands at the club in any case.

Oh let's not face it Blacky. I'll make it simple and easy: I like the simplicity of the new kit. so, please leave the poppy cock to one side and accept that some people like it in the same way people are allowed to not like it.

"you only like it because it's Southampton" .... come on give people the credit to have their own mind.

We're Southampton aren't we? so why the flaming henrys are we wearing Liverpool's kit? I know we have occasionally diverted from Red n white stripes in the past, and I really liked the Red sash (mainly because it made us look like a can of Jamaican lager). Even that Hummel thing in the eighties was our own unique ugly mess, and the shorts were black.

I have had time to sleep on it, and it hasn't grown on me yet. Maybe it will, but at the moment, I'm embarressed.

Having slept on the shock of that new kit, I can honestly say I am still very upset by the design and hate the idea of us playing as a sudo Liverpool of the 80's
I liked the comment about Newcastle changing their kit to all black with a micro thin white pin-stripe - what do you think the reaction of the Geordie's would be?

Geordie reaction .... a bit like when they renamed the stadium ... oh what? they stopped moaning because the team were winning and it didn't matter anymore? Dark Lord, I still think we will be back in Stripes again in a season or two. I think Cortese has been clever. New era, new kit. Easy opportunity to get some income stream going if he switches to stripes again for the next change.

It is refreshing I believe that we have a leader willing to change. I just can't ever remember such a storm over a kit. The sash, the Rank Xerox, the all red shirt, the disgusting Pony thing. We just seem to have gone bonkers over this. I really didn't like the wide "early Pahars thick striped " kit, but hey, it was what the club chose.

Come on Archers... "embarressed"??? really? It's a bold move by a bold leader. I see the sense in it myself commercially and like the fact it gives us a fresh new look for a fresh return to the Premier league.

I remain convinced that the stripes will return.

exactly the same point I made responding to this. I have chosen to like it, some have chosen not to. fair enough. What I don't like is the dramatic bemoaning of the loss of our tradition over it.

Nothing quite as dramatic as some choosing to liken this to the Cardiff redesigning! As I've stated earlier, if we switched to the old damn ugly quarters kit, it would be traditional, but how many people would be happy with that? I'll take an aesthetically pleasing kit over a traditional kit, thanks.

see that's when I slip back to being an "old fart" or whatever it was you called me <whistle>, because I have the old quartered one after that last friendly game at The Dell and like it.... just when I thought I was "hip" with the kids!!

Well, I'm sure some people (or just old farts) would like the quartered kit :p

Either way this isn't actually too untraditional... it is still red and white stripes, technically!

Well, I've slept on it, and I still don't really like it much. Bit too boring. Prefer the away kit, quite a nice clean casual shirt.

However, my first real drinking session for a while has somewhat sedated my dissapointment. If the lads do fantastic, soon enough we'll have iconic images of our lads celebrating goals in the shirt, and all will be forgotten. Lets start at the etihad. Jay Rod kissing the bagde as he runs towards the away support!

I think they look pretty nice, simple.

That said, I think if anyone removed our stripes there'd be WWIII, as mentioned though, you guys ain't always played in stripes anyway.

Good luck for the season <ok>

How can one be "boring" and the other be "nice clean casual shirt" when they are the same, apart from colour?

Me thinks you just don't look as sexy in red fella :kiss:

    Ha ha.

You'd be some club to have your reserves play in a stadium 18k bigger in a higher league than you mind ;)

Good to have you back, always seen you as on of the '20 clubs that would be in the top league if it was based on things not on the park', if that makes sense?

I like it. I would also have liked it if it was like the Croatia strip, or if we'd gone back to the slash, or if we'd kept the even width stripes. The fact is that whatever the strip, provided it is essentially red and white, or white and red, if Southampton are playing in it, it is a Southampton strip.

For goodness sake get over yourselves and look through this:

    http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Southampton/Southampton.htm

This shows that since 1976 the strip has varied considerably from what people are quite right to call the "traditional" red and white stripes. And the 1983-84 Air Florida strip was worn in what was arguably our most successful season ever.

I'm not arguing against tradition, but the club is not the strip it wears, it's the players and management, and of course the fans. Come the 18th August we will all be behind the team just as much as ever, whatever strip they are wearing.
