And those ratings are for footballing reasons are they? There's a lot of assumptions going on here about our previous manager. A lot of people are assuming that their "gobby ****e" analysis is correct and proven. Well I want to state for the record that I don't agree with that statement and even if there was an element of truth in it I would still have kept Harry because I think he did a great job and we're not going to get any better. Clearly there are different camps about Harry, and people have made their minds up so I think it will only cause grief to get into a debate, because I think that will rapidly deteriorate and we're all Spurs supporters here. Therefore can we agree to differ?
Vimhawk, if you're not going to blindly follow the club's decisions like the rest of us you will be banned I think 'Arry in the media was always a problem, he ran his mouth at every opportunity. First he said Modric would stay then he said he should leave, embarrassing and undermining Levy's stance. There's our "title challenge" which when it was deflated became "4th is better than we could've hoped for anyway" and finally his insistence that the England job rumours didn't distract the players, yet being in his last season of contract would have as the players wouldn't know if he was staying. 'Arry did a lot of great stuff and I'd have been happy to have him stay for next season but with all the England speculation going on I always thought this summer would be the right time for a change of direction. Modric looks like he's off and if we mess up CL football again we face losing even more of our stars. I know it's totally speculation but I get the feeling Levy wanted to reinvest big this summer, meaning spending £20-30mill net, and I don't think he wanted 'Arry to oversee it which is fair enough.
I agree with this YV. we haven't been this "active" at this point in a transfer window for a while now. I think it's fair to say that those people who predicted that Levy was holding funds back for a longer term manager, we're correct. I can see us being very clever in this window, even though it's very likely we'll lose modric. - it could actually be for the better.
I, too, believe that Levy is going to spend big - including getting in the right man to manage the club; and that it's because of that that he couldn't trust Redknapp to remain in charge, after his show of disloyalty to the club. I think that would have hurt Levy, especially as he, more than anyone else, had stood by Redknapp for so long before his court case. Levy took a big risk with that, both to his own reputation (had Redknapp been convicted), and for that of the club. Yes, Redknapp is a good manager, but I refuse to believe that he is the best that we could hope to get. We are Spurs, not Pompey or Wet Spam.
Sorry, it's a matter of opinion, not fact. If I'm not upset by what he said then why should I regard him as you do? As I said, not something we are likely to agree on so let's try and move on and hope that whatever the outcome is, it's best for Spurs! Mind you, I also have to be persuaded that Modric leaving will be better for us as some have suggested. It's not about the vast amount of money we should get, it's about replacing a first team player. If we can't get someone who brings an equal contribution to the team then having £££ in the bank is meaningless.
if we can't get someone to replace him for up to £40 million pounds, you might as well class Luka Modric as one of the top 5 CMs in the world, right now. The fact is, he isn't. He scores some good goals every now and again. In fact, its an average of 1 in 10. Not enough. He's got an amazing ability to pick out a good pass, but so have other midfielders. he can't take set pieces either. To get a potential 40 million for him is great money. There are other midfielders out there right now, just like him 4 years ago, who would cost us about £15mill. If that's still too much of a risk, we go for someone proven (if we're willing to spend all that money). and 40 mill will put us in the market for almost anyone in that role. (except the iniesta's etc.) Luka Modric is a very good player, but for £40mill he's replaceable.
What after you have just stirred it up again? Just repeating an unsubstantiated view does not make it correct.
Sorry, didn't mean to stir things up. Just wanted to say that there was at least one person with a different view. And agreed, just repeating a view doesn't make it correct, it is my opinion.
I agree that I'd rather keep Modric but if a good offer comes in from a team abroad we should accept it and move on. We don't need a player disrupting our preseason and the beginning of our season striking and having speculation surrounding him. If the quotes coming out are true then it's probably best we avoid the confrontation with him again and allow our squad to settle as the season begins. It's almost inevitable that Modric leaving will weaken us to some extent but we'd be even weaker if we kept him and he went on strike or put in poor performances as he sulked, which is likely.
Agreed, a "non-motivated" player, regardless of their potential ability, is of less use than a less capable player you are sure of getting a performance out of. Of course it remains to be seen how much of this speculation over Modric is actually true. Sometimes the truth generates more than one source, sometimes different sources refer back to the same source that was wrong in the first place. It's a murky world this sports so-called journalism! I would argue however that in regard to last season, although the speculation and tapping up seriously damaged us at the start, the contribution Modric made more than offset that in the big scheme of things, justifying the stance we took. Not claiming the same thing would happen, but letting dissenting players move whenever they want is not good practice and sets a precedent.
I agree with all of that, it was a great stance to take, showing we'd not let ourselves be bullied but Modric did kick on once the transfer window closed but if he's willing to go abroad I think we should show him some understanding and let him leave. As long as Madrid don't tap him up and leak all their bids to the press like Chelsea did.
i say keep him. He can always have a bosman in 5 years or so. If he doesn't like it then he can sit on the bench or train on his own. I assume he wants to continue playing for Croatia. That ain't gonna happen if he isn't match fit.
It should be remembered that many of these stories in the press come from agents. It's easy for reporters looking for a story to speak to an agent who has a vested interested in players moving anyway. Modric is just a commodity, a source of income, moving him from club to club is the best way to generate income for the agent. More regulation is needed IMO.
Lets all relax, there's no need for a domestic!! Yes Vimhawk, Obviously those ratings aren't solely footballing reasons, but as far as invoking club spirit etc, I don't think we've ever had a manager as loved as Jol was, in my lifetime anyway. The whole point of this forum is debate anyway isn't it? You have your opinion, I have mine, we discuss, and we leave holding onto our own view even more veraciously As long as it doesn't come down to petty name calling, and general abuse, you could tell me that Hossam Ghaly was the best player we've ever had, and I'd have to respect the argument, but not necessarily agree with it. There's no need for censorship of debate And there's no need to get abusive if you don't like the point a mans made. Ever looked on the Swansea board? Its 99% posters attacking each other. Thank God we can all agree on some things
if we can replace him with someone who scores about 10 goals a season from midfield then we wont be missing Modric...world class and all that is great....i find his shooting to be on a par with my 10 year old and goal scoring record on a par..no actually alot worse than Vertognen's ...ooops i mentioned him..i was not going to mention Vertognen anymore unless we got him. i think we are going to get ourselves a good deal....and the Hudd can ping a pass..infact i think we need to just get the Hudd back to top shape and he will get us more goals and will create..maybe we will have to work on his defensive duties as Modric is good in that dept. but whatever we get for him we dont have to spend it on a replacement..we can strengthen other postions with it..i think we need a lethal finisher..A STRIKER is his name...to put away our umpteen chances in any one game. a Sidenote..is the Ian Rush,Lineker type of striker dieing out? dont see many true poachers anymore..need someone to put them away like these 2 used to...Close is the Klosest in the modern game that i can think of (see what i did? clever)....anyway back to Bale.
What's love got to do with it? And dare I say: We all: Aren't on speaking terms with Judas... Would like to beat Arsenal Wee sitting down.
