Well I left the forum early Friday night as I had to do some research on a car.

My 17 year old son had bought a Civic 1.5i LS on the internet!!!
No discussion just "Look at the car I've bought Dad"
Bad enough you may think, but no.
The car was at Crewe FFS!
So spent the rest of Friday night organising my son in law to come with us to drive it back.
Dreading the M6 as it was Grand National day and was expecting lots of Saturday footy traffic down that way.
Off to Teesdale Saturday morning to pick up the son in law from their caravan.
Head over to the M6 and have to say it is one hell of a road (I just hope their were no hidden speed cams as I absolutely flew down it.) Couple of hours later and we reach Crewe.
The car is immaculate full service history and ran like a dream.
The seller failed to mention one slight point!
The ****ing thing had been lowered!!!
I was fuming no previous mention of this in any way, to get cover for my son was going to be expensive to get it for a modified car didn't bare thinking about.
The guy realised I was pissed off and kept backing away, after driving all that way I had a right to be.
My son had got him down to £900, which for the car itself was pretty fair, as good ones go for £1500.
Long story short had a chat with the lads, I was pretty sure we could get at least £1200 for it back here if we needed to sell it, got him down to £775 as it wasn't as described. :p

    Now the insurance.
My son has only just received his provisional so he will go down as a named driver.
Had some canny quotes £12.000 being one <nahnah>

Best I have found is around the £3,000 mark, now I was expecting it to be high and so was my son as he will be paying it.

    ANY TIPS?
I knew of the putting a female on as a named driver used to work and reduced premiums hugely, but since that European court ruling that has changed.
So come on guys help me out here please, there must be some trick I'm missing.

Yourself as the main driver, make sure you've got NC Bonus and your son as a named driver, thats the best you're gonna get.

Although there is this new insure the box thing

    http://www.insurethebox.com/

That might be better, depending on what kind of driving your son will be doing.

It's generally sky high for a 17 year old male. I'm turning 17 in a couple of months, and can't wait to drive, but the insurance might be too much

I found it cheaper to get my son covered as a learner driver on a separate policy. He went and bought a Mini Cooper, daft twat cos they are a group 8 even though they are ****e. Anyway it cos me and the missus about £210 fully comp then the boy paid something like £275 for 3 months cover as a learner driver through a specialist company, can't remember the name of the company and he's not back in till after 7:00 but i'll PM you the details if he still has them. Maybe do a Google for Learner Driver Policies????

Like you, we were getting silly qoutes of like £8,000, cheapest was about £4,000. Luckily he passed his test then he came onto our insurance but it was still steep.

Aye I have seen that site mate, his driving will mainly be from Sunderland to the land of the unwashed where he will be based for the next 5 years.
So well within their 6000 miles.
Do they track speed etc. or just mileage?
Although it may be worth my while trawling some of the motoring forums for discussions on them.

The Civic is group 10 mate I did tell him to get a couple of years under his belt on something like a Corsa.
    Would he listen?
    Would he f&^*!

    Mind I should talk my T5 is group 16 or 17. :p
Done the Learner driver search as well. <ok>

My daughter just rang me to let me know she did a search as her as the policy holder and him as named driver came up just under the 3k.

I've just renewed my insurance. I got the price down by putting 2 named drivers on with no convictions etc. Try admiral multi-car. I'm 19 and was expecting a pretty high premium but on the multi car policy it's a lot cheaper than expected.

Ohh and once he's passed, tell him not to drive like a Formula 1 driver, I did and ended upside down after a few months...

Tried Admiral wasn't expecting much as they had quoted me £1000 for my own renewal !!! (Thieving gets)
Came out about £4,500 I think.
I hear what you're saying about F1 I have warned him if he wants to go down that route, his insurance will be more than he is earning!

Haven't had any points for awhile. <croSsedfingerandtouchingwoodsmiley>
The thing I find silly about them is when they are placed on good clear stretches of road!
Thats not a SAFETY camera that is a taxation camera.
I always drive sensibly about town and drop well below the speed limit near schools.
I have to say I enjoyed the M6 plenty of lanes and reasonably clear I would say the majority of people were averaging 85 (KPH just in case old Bill is reading :p)
Yet there were still drivers doing 50 in the middle lanes? I just don't understand them, people were actually undertaking them, driving normally in the slow lane!!!!

Be honest with the insurance company, the only way he will get cheap insurance in his own name is to earn his own NCB. Insure it in your own name if you must, but if he is the main user make sure he is declared as such, to do anything other is fraud(called fronting).

The insurers are clamping down on it and in the event of a claim they will null and void the insurance and you will be left to foot the bill, including third party liabilities(I'll assume you like your home).

If he has a quote online from a comparator(aggregator) then it will not be worth a light as they will not know about the lowered suspension, get yourself to a broker, Westland Ins in Sunderland is a proper broker, they will do their best.

It might be best to pay a bit more now to go with one of the insurers who allow named drivers to earn no claims bonus themselves. After 2 or 3 years if he manages to avoid shunts or points then you may be able to transfer the car into his name and make things legit.

Unfortunately this didn't work for my 19 year old who has been responsible for 2 claims inside his first year of driving. He might be off the road completely when the insurance comes up for renewal.

Off topic, but I can't drive. Haven't bothered to learn how. If you people saw the roads, traffic and how people drive in Nairobi, you probably wouldn't dare drive either!

Seen them drive in Nigeria mate, ****ing scary i tell you, big **** off trucks with tyres like sausage skins snaking down the road at a steady rate off knots, not good for the blood pressure. Used to cycle back to the digs each night after graft and many a time had to dive off the thing due to a big 30 ton truck coming at ya.

Know what you mean, it's a complete mess. Public transport is best here, the drivers are as mad as everyone else and know how to find a way through the chaos. If I drove, not only would I risk a heart attack (at 20!) every day but would be obliged to pay a massive sum out in bribes to the police to make life bearable. Not worth it yet...

Sounds like fun to me. <ok>
I love a driving challenge, though saying that the only wild animal I have had to contend with was a Stag jumping on my bonnet up Scotland, when I was doing about 50. Car unmarked and the Stag didn't even look back. :)
And I have had a lot of pheasants attack my car vicious little buggers. (Honest MiLord,) as roadkill they still taste yummy. :p)

The most insane road I've been on is the ring road around Rome. There aren't any real lanes, it's like the Arc de Triomphe but bigger!

    Try Adrian Flux mate.

They are a brokers who specialize in young drivers, bikes and modified cars, i used them for several years till i hit the magic 25 and could actually get decent quotes, they were a ****ing godsend to me, as i had a Fiesta RS aged 19 (You can imagine the quotes from 'big' insurers!)

My insurance has gone up £210 this year, and that's with shopping round, ****ing scandalous.

We have very nice traffic lights in Nairobi. Nobody bothers with them, pedestrians included, but they do make the city look modern I suppose. So we have police to direct traffic at roundabouts, since everybody (including them) ignores the lights (which are always in perfect working order). They do an awful, awful job.
