This makes so much sense. He's been one of, if not the favourite with the bookies for a couple of weeks, all of a sudden there's more signings we're after, and now bale signs a new deal. Now don't get me wrong, a manager wouldn't be solely responsible for all of that, Levy would play a big part obviously, but there's so much going on which indicates that there is someone in place. I know levy has gone after players himself in the past, but would we really be going after players like sigurdsson right now without the manager situation resolved? with Levy being the businessman that he is, I can hardly see him spending 8 mill on someone who might be a player that the next manager doesn't want. that'd be totally out of character. but just my opinion.

Thank you Gareth for sticking with us.
It's up to the club to show him and match his long term ambition.

This does make a lot of sense though.

It is also consistent with us being active in the transfer market despite not having a manager. Although I would like to think that we would have a list of targets in any case it is always a risk in football to sign someone that the new manager doesn't rate. So AVB must be advising Levy.

Nah, Capello reckons Bale is best in the world

    Awesome news about the contract.

    Happiness for everyone.

    i could agree more.
Even with "Levy signings" like VDV its common knowledge (if stuff coming out of Harry can be considered knowledge or trusted) that he would ring up Harry and say "do you want X?" and Harry would say "yeah, he's triffic".
I can't imagine Levy has just taken to making up his own targets unless of course he is our next manager himself

Also, i don't think a player would sign up without knowing who was in charge next. Getting Bale to sign - a good start for the new man

I dont think contracts mean that much in this day and age but it does mean you will get top money when he wants out next summer when a big club come in for him.

I wouldn't say that making signings indicates that we've got a new manager, as Levy's active in that area anyway.
The bookies failing to alter their odds on Villas-Boas despite his apparent denial in the Portuguese press did peak my interest, though.

It makes negotiating a large fee a lot easier, too.

Congrats guys, annoyed (obviously) that you're keeping such a great player but it's also a victory for football that there are still some players who aren't mercenaries who run off to real or city as soon as they come sniffing.

I agree with this PNP, but it would seem a little odd that he was behind the sigurdsson deal at such a crucial time when we need a manager. which therefore makes me wonder if the "priorities" have been sorted for a few days. If it is AVB, perhaps the first thing he's said to Levy is, something on the lines of getting Sigurdsson before liverpool do, as he is the first signing he'd like to see?

I have the sneaking suspicion that what he is is bright. He realizes an excellent reputation will get him at least as much money in the long run as being the typicalukal no-loyalty, no-honor pro--and having the fans solidly behind you is a huge perq.

Glad I called him my favorite player earlier this year!

I have another theory, which is that the key number of all the many which fly around is the worth of the club. It's skyrocketed, as I remember reading. Even a large increase in the wage cap would, I think, make more financial sense for the owner than interrupting the club's rise through penny-wise, pound-foolish decisions.

This announcement convinces me that AVB has signed to take over from July 1st as I mentioned a few days ago on another thread. Why would a player commit his future to the club without knowing who's taking over from Redknapp? Reading between the lines, it appears the managers position has been sorted out, the club simply can't announce it yet.

<ok> there's a few other reasons that PNP, Spurfect and I have also mentioned too, Flaspur. (maybe others who I've missed)

    I'm convinced too.

Yep agreed I am convinced the ink is on the contract. Not quite so convinced it's a good move for the club. I will however reserve judgement, back whoever comes in and hope they really make a success of it.

I'd been lukewarm on AVB, but Bale, and maybe Vertongen and Sigurdson liking him (maybe!) really tips the scales for me--my main concern was whether the players wanted to play for him.

Mostly I'm very happy there's some solid and definite good news for Spurs.
