Let me put this into the mixer. Were we to sell holt for 6mil, do you think we will spend 6+mil on replacing him? Mcnally always has said about the replacement cost and that's a benefactor in the price were asking for but do you think we will actually use all that money for one cos I don't think we will!?
i think we will, if we're looking for a quality younger replacement, someone who would be able to cut it in the top league.
I'm a bit sad people are so anti Holt about this. He has not been a high earner for most of his career and so hasn't got a big nest egg in comparison to most of those around him, even at Norwich. He has an opportunity to earn maybe 2 or 3 times as much in the last year or two of his career, why wouldn't he look at providing the best he can for his family before it's all over and he has to find a 'normal' job. I don't think anybody here would turn down a job that offered to double or triple their pay if it came along, to say otherwise sounds a bit hypocritical to me. I think if we have an offer of £4.5M as a down payment that looks like a really good deal and we should salute McNally for holding his nerve and not blinking. The increase is all in the up-front payment and that looks like a negotiating response. Holt isn't a local lad and is here because we pay his wages, just like any employee. He has been an exemplary employee and we shouldn't give him a hard time for doing exactly what we would do in the same circumstances. To a certain extent all the above also applies to Lambert, he was appointed and paid a wage to do a job which he did brilliantly, we should applaud their time here not become bitter because it suits them to move on. Neither has said anything disparaging about the club, the region or the fans, we should be equally graceful.
jaob, i think you're missing the point as most people are just totally fed up with the saga playing out and the timing of his transfer request was frankly, stupid and very ill-advised, on the eve of the testimonial for a loyal and brilliant servant for the club. if he wants to move on because he wants more money then come out and say so, don't try to hide it behind a rather weak clamour for an extra year on top of the two he already has and that some people have made 'comments he didn't like'. even if holt stays, and i think most of us would love him to, then his reputation is at the very least tainted with us. i can't speak for everyone but i imagine most are like me and just want it sorted one way or the other pretty sharpish so we all know what's going on. gut feeling is he will go because he has had his head turned by whoever but i'm 99% sure myself that he's making a massive mistake and its ALL to do with money.
Pretty much agree with this and it does make sense, but on the other hand, had we not given him the opportunity 3 years ago, he could still be earning a few hundred pounds a week at Shrewsbury or similar. I would just like to add that there is very little loyalty in football or any other sport/profession, so don't blame GH - just his idiot of an agent who seems to be primarily 'looking after number1', rather than his client.
I agree it has dragged on a bit but that is surely McNally wringing every last drop out of any potential suitors. I also agree his big chance has come from the move to Norwich but he has done everything the club could have asked of him in terms of his performances on and largely off field as well. I also agree the timing of his request on the eve of Drury's testimonial wasn't great and the language is textbook agent b***ocks. However, having agreed with all that I still feel fans are a bit harsh in some of their comments about Holt or Lambert on a personal level. In terms of wanting it over I couldn't agree more but if McNasty can screw another £100K out of the spanners then I don't mind waiting a bit.
**** £6 million, some of you seem to forget how important Holt has been for us! I'll pay £6,000,000 just to keep him here!
really? i mean, you're right - he is extremely important, but if a player wants out at the age of 31 and you get £6m for him, that's good business to sell and replace with a younger player. there are better footballers than grant holt, no matter how good he has been for us. don't let your heart rule your head.
Honestly, I hope he goes now. Way too much water has gone under the bridge, and its clear - regardless of who it has come from - his heart is not here. Lets get £6m in and splash it all on a new hero, that hopefully won't get too big for his boots in less than three years! ****ed off with all this, will he stay, won't he stay!
It's not that I am being sentimental, it is simply that £6,000,000 will NOT go anywhere near to replacing Grant Holt, especially not if you are getting a younger player. Holt is irreplaceable IMO, the fact that Leon Best would cost £4,000,000 and he is nowhere near as good as Grant Holt and not really that young either, tells you all you need to know! IMO Jay Rod wouldn't be as good as Holt and he is valued at more!
Joab, I agree that both Holt and Lambert have played a massive part in saving our club and I will always be grateful to them. I also think, in pure mercenary terms, that if we can turn a £400,000 investment into a £4 million return, added to the wealth of the PL that Holt's performance has helped us access then we thank him for his efforts and send him on his way if that is what he wants.
i don't know where you are getting your pricing from! leon best for £4m? i heard £2m. £6m will buy a foreign striker capable of doing the business and you seem to be assuming that we'd only spend that - surely we would spend whatever it takes - we could have probably spent £3m+ on another forward to compliment our current forwards anyway, even with holt staying, so i really don't see what you're getting at with this. no player, and i really do mean no player, is irreplaceable. leon best would not be a direct replacement for holt. i think you're totally over reacting about holt - there are many better, younger strikers out there who we could get and £6m would go part of the way to securing them.
just want to make it clear though - i would like holt to stay and i am willing to leave the door ajar, so to speak, but i would never suggest he is irreplaceable - that to me is looking at the situation with clouded judgement.
6 million is an insult. **** off west ham and take your apples and ****ing pears with you yOu crafty cockney ****s.
