Women who wear face-covering Islamic veils in public in France are now breaking the law.

Veiled women risk a €150 fine, special classes and a police record. People who force women to wear a veil are subject to a much larger fine.

The ban was approved by parliament in September and came into effect today. It affects women who wear the niqab, which has just a slit for the eyes, and the burka, which has a mesh screen over the eyes.

Both are quite rare in France, whose at least five million Muslims are largely moderate. French President Nicolas Sarkozy says the veils imprison women and are an affront to principles of equality and secularism.

    Special classes?

What does that involve then? How not to put on a burka or niqab?

There's only about 2,000 Muslim women in France who actually wear this gear. It's a big news story for a President who is losing support to the far right, tell a couple of people they can't wear some of the most extreme Muslim robes and get a couple of million extra votes.

They should be banned. They're demeaning to woman and are simply a way for Muslim men to subjugate their wives.

    Its about time.

The worrying thing is it has taken France of all countries to stand up to what is a pathetic excuse to subject women to a mans control.

    FRANCE people, France!

    yeah it does.

The argument from some women I have heard talk about it is that it is empowering for them.
Dine by me. If that is what they want.

To be fair, France does have a large right-wing political scene (the National Front are massive there) so it's no surprise that they would take the lead on this. As Mick said it may have been done for politican means (Sarkozy pandering to the far right) but it's still the right thing to do.

I prefer to eat alone <ok>

The reality is that for millions of women around the world the veil is a symbol of submissiveness and subserviency. There are also other factors to take into account, namely terrorism where the veil is a perfect disguise for both men and women bombers.

Erm....thats called if I dont wear it I will be next weeks Kebab meat talk.

They are forced to wear it, force doesnt need to be beating. Mental abuse and being brainwashed into hiding themselves away is just as bad if not worse.

Its oppressive and there is no other word to describe it. its like walking about with a ball and chain ( no not your wives ).

And not arsed about the far right, taking steps like this doesnt make people racists or nazis for god sake. Its a sensible thing to do. Anyone see that woman on TV who came out and said the burkha is evil. Was on channel 4 and she was a muslim. She refused to wear it and hasnt seen her family since.

    Pathetic.

How do you know that en masse they are forced to wear it?

One woman, one place, one time doesn't make it an across the board fact does it?

Women are oppressed in Islam. this is not up for debate. One of the symbols of this oppression is the fact they are made to hide away in public as only there husband and father can see their skin.

Contrast that with freedom and you have two things that just dont match. Freedom will always win out over oppression.

Correct, to generalise a whole group of people as the same as a small minority is wrong.
