In the moments straight after Chris Waddle missed his penalty there was something I never expected to see. Whilst his German teammates are celebrating in the six yard box, Lothar Matteus consoled Chris Waddle, not just a pat on the back and a "Cheers mate" but a genuinely honest gesture. I couldn't remember ever seeing that footage before and always had Matteus down as a fantastic player but a bit of a tw@t. But that was fantastic.
I'm just wathcing this. Excuse my ignorance and memory (I was only a young whipper snapper at the time) but without googling how did England, Republic of Ireland and Holland all qualify from a 4 team group?
It was a different system then with, I think 6 groups of 4 teams (only 24 in total) with something like top 2 and best placed 3rd places going through to the last 16.
I tell you what people dont give credit too, the amazing camera work for THAT moment with Gazza. If he'd been stood at a different angle or the producer had cut away sooner and we hadnt caught Lineker saying 'Have a word with him' it wouldnt have been anywhere near as good. People go on about Gazza but for me Lineker's reaction is what makes that moment. Like a mate looking out for his pal who has has found out a bird he's smitten with has sucked someone else off. Brilliant.
