My oversleeping was due entirely to the frailties of my alarm clock. It went off at the required hour, but had wandered off station creating the strangest noise. As I came to I thought that something had gone wrong with my plumbing system. I do mean the house plumbing system. When my hand automatically reached out and switched the thing off and the noise abated, relief that I did not have to get the spanners out spread though my mind. Feeling more relaxed, I promptly turned over and went back to sleep for another hour and a bit.
Over sleeping. I wake with the light so the days are long. We have presidential elections on 30. June. There are eight candidates. Ãlafur Ragnar GrÃmson is trying to be elected again and could be president for the fifth period. The other candidates are Andrea Jóhanna Ãlafsðóttir, Ari Trausti Guðmundsson, Ãsþór Magnússon, Hannes Bjarnason, HerdÃs Ãorgiersðóttir, Jón Larusson and Ãora Arnórsðóttir. They are in order an anti-government candidate(!), former communist and now independent, a pacifist, a farmer, a lawyer, a police chief and a TV journalist who has a sixth child in May. How a mother of six children all teenage and younger could be president is beyond my imagining and she got the nomination because she is on TV and people know the face.
So glad we've a Queen, how long do they stay as President? also do you have a Parliament with a Prime Minister or are you like the USA and have a House of Representatives?
The president is elected for four years. We have Alþingi which is only one level of government like the House Of Commons and no House of Lords and has 63 seats. Alþingi has its president like the speaker of House Of Commons and we have a prime minister who is Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir of Samfylkingin or Social Democratic Alliance. [SUP][/SUP] The way the members are elected is complicated. We have six areas and then proportional representing. Which looks after nine seats for each area and the last nine seats are divided proportionally from the complete national voting. There is lot of information http://www.althingi.is/vefur/upplens.html and there is English translations. Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir is the most beautiful prime minister sometimes and plays for the others. please log in to view this image please log in to view this image
