Yes, I have quite a bit of knowledge of the Qur'an. For instance, I know that you're confused about the verse you're talking about. It does say to separate the marital bed, but goes on to say that if this fails, you're allowed to hit them. It emphasises it as a last resort, but it definitely says that; it's not a linguistic confusion between "separate" and "beat", they're two different parts of the text. The part about separation comes immediately before the part about beating.

For me, the concept of a holy text telling the men of the faith that it's acceptable under any circumstances to physically strike their spouse is an issue. There's no getting around it; it's what it says. And if you're a religious literalist, you have to follow the Qur'an to the letter and believe that this is correct behaviour. Which gives me a problem with anyone believing in the Qur'an. It's not the only thing the Qur'an says, that's just an example of morally abhorrant behaviour which is deemed acceptable in the text, and the Qur'an is no more guilty than the Bible or any other Abrahamic holy text, but there you go.

And yes, you were calling me ignorant.

Ammaar, you seem like a nice person. I hope you enjoy your faith and go to your heaven but you're wasting your time arguing on here. <ok>

I think you're probably a nice person, it's such a shame everything you believe in is rubbish:tongue:

I got sucked in and took exception to that statement because freedom of speech would be restricted and never again would we hear the wise teachings from great philosophers like Bill Hicks and George Carlin(God bless their souls)
    Peace out:emoticon-0148-yes:

Who are you to say what he believes in is rubbish? You or I don't have that rite. What he wishes to believe in is his own bussiness.

Tongue in cheek, hence the smiley.
Who is he to say that people who mock religion should be punished? If I believe all religion to be rubbish it's my right to express that belief without fear of punishment, right?

    <whistle>

I'm sure that there are theistic views that you would mock too, Ammaar.
    Scientology, for example.
    Who draws the line?

If people truely believed in the religion surely its promise of punishing the person in the afterlife is enough

I do. It's simple, don't poke fun at anyone's beliefs. I someone finds solace in a deity and cause no harm to anyone else what harm are they doing?

The belief itself can be harmful, depending upon which deity and sect we're talking about, plus it leads to things like this:

Sorry Ammaar, but you're thinking in reverse.
You could apply the same logic to the BNP/EDL's reaction to anything that they don't think is English, like building a mosque.
    Nationalism is a worldwide belief.

The idea that god would be upset by a nasty drawing is a strange one to me anyway, but that's a different subject.
