Accepted - But who has played well for england this tournament? Gerrard, Parker and the defence. What have none of them done? Keep hold of the ball for any length of time. Who has been criticised? Those expected to keep hold of the ball.

As a team, ENgland were pants at keeping hold of the ball. Rooney can do that well enough playing for his club, as can all the players, when there are more technical players around them.

Rooney can be class. Not the player the sensationalist media make him out to be, but he can be class, if there is a team around him that play good football.

Im pinning my hopes on Wilshere and Cleverly returning to fitness, Ox getting a run in the team and some new players coming through.

Gerrard has always been a legend in my eye but he willbe 34 come the next world cup - time to move on i think. Rooney however will be 28. I dont disagree that he should not be undroppable, but give him a chance in a team playing in a way that suits his strengths first.

Not a united fan, just not a complete idiot.

How do you know he was meant to stay tight to Pirlo? Were you in the dressing room? Besides, blaming a striker for not defending is imbecilic in the extreme.

His dribbling was fine, and his movement was in a different league to the rest of the english team.

He is a powerful strong quick striker, but he aint world class anfter our players showing in this tournament no one can call our players world class. Ashley cole is probably the closest to it but he is still far off from being world class.

I cant remeber that Italian player who came on as a substitute, but apparentley he was a West Ham reject, he came on and ran us ragged with his passing and technical ability.

We might have some great players in the EPL but sadly they are not allowed to play football!

Several pundits have said so in analysis of the game. Picking up Wayne's "efforts" to close down his space.
In your own opinion, which is in contrast with the majority according to this, Twitter and BBC Sport football fans... Doesn't that make you think you're wrong?

Mowbray gave him a 5. Joint second lowest in his ratings... Want to go call him a "complete idiot"? Obviously McNulty knows nothing, either. The point is Roy Hodgson felt at liberty to pick Rooney, our "best player", who then preceded to get a 5... Is that worthy of world class status? Definitely not. Is it worthy of inclusion in the England squad at the expense of someone who got a 6 from the bench? No.

His dribbling was dreadful, he lost the ball countless times. He set-up one chance, doesn't make him Maradonna.

In short, stop pretending you're god. People paid to observe the game, and the majority of fans apparently disagree with you, so either beggar off and get your coaching badges and become the best manager England has ever had, or stop insulting people.

Of course McNulty knows nothing. The man's a complete tool.

I bet none of those 'pundits' know that Rooney was meant to be on Pirlo. Considering some of the corkers that Shearer and Hansen came out with they clearly haven't watched any football since they retired.

I stick by what I said. Anyone that thinks Rooney was ****e is an idiot and should never be allowed to comment on football again.

These tools who defend Shrek make me laugh.

" a bit rusty " wtf is that about.

You dimwits make it sound like he hasnt touched a ball for 6 months .

If he had been sitting on his settee eating pies for the last 6 months he would have an excuse.

Hasnt he been TRAINING , like kicking balls and stuff with the rest of the squad ?

I dunno maybe he just watched the rest train while he played on his DS .

a bit rusty my arse .!

    The answer is simple .

He is cr@p in big games.

He looks great against Blackburn rovers or Norwich .

But against REAL world class players (of which he is most definitely NOT ) he is like a seaside donkey.

I lost count of the times his first touch FAILED.

The amount of times he seemed to fall over his own bleedin ' feet..

If Woy is relying on him to get us thru all competitions we are indeed doomed to failure .

I'm guessing you didn't watch either game he played in then, because he was ****ing awful in both, did he manage to complete a pass? wow, he scored a goal from 2 inches into an open goal, that was his only contribution, to the english any way, how many times did his shambolic 'ball control' give the opposition the ball? 10? 20? Why Hodfgson left him on is beyond me, the only people defending him are plastic manc tools.

Great players can drag their under-performing team-mates to the latter stages of tournaments:

    Baggio in 1994
    Zidane in 2006
    C Ronaldo this year

Rooney has never had the ability to carry England. As someone has already mentioned, he can do it in the league but that doesn't make him world class. Last night he was shocking. If it wasn't for the fact that Wayne Rooney can't read or write I would swear that "Pete Doherty" is his pseudonym on here.

well he did knock in a ball from 6 inches out , that had already been deflected by 2 defenders and flapped through the hands of a goalie.

He is obviously in the same class as messi ,

    the white pele .

    feckin looooool.!

Alessandro Diamanti, a player West Ham said "nah... we don't really want you" ran us ragged indeed. When you think of that, you realize how ****ing poor England really really are.

    correct.

Look at what ronaldo gives to the team .

He turns nothing into goal scoring opportunities..

Shrek turns goal scoring opportunities into .........nothing ...

In fact I reckon West Ham could beat this England team without many problems.

I tell ya what son , i wish Shearer was on the pitch last light instead of that lump of lard.

As a UTD fan I can honestly say I had bet my lad that rooney would be the weak link in the england team.
I based this on his last 2 seasons for UTD.
The Ukraine game summed him up. No control, no first touch, no dribbling/pace/trickery etc missed from about 3 yards out but gets a flukey goal and all is good in tha hood

For UTD he gets a lot more chances and bar say the chelsea game (where he didnt score) he has been poor

Those who defend him make me laugh. He was knackered and we need a winter break becomes well he was not playing and was resting so rusty
He could resolve our midfield problems due to his skill etc becomes hos is a striker supposed to mark pirlo
He likes to be involved and so drops into midfield becomes he was isolated up top and no one passed to him

Just watch the Italy game again and look at the basics he does wrong, control, first touch, timing for theheaders etc.
Truth be told if he plays like he has been lately I can see another not so good season

I gotta be honest. I didn't have too many issues with Rooney. He coulda been better no doubts but to expect him to score everytime he touches the ball is insane. The rest of the team where **** and they all need to learn how to pass. The team dynamic is non-existant and it just feels like the team have been thrown together with no real advice or tactics other than don't leave our 18-yard box.

I blame Hodgson entirely, we do have a **** team and we were no expected to do anything but he is just a terrible manager and I do not see how anyone can disagree after that. Absolutely **** tactically and doesn't know how to change a game. He could have and should have shown a lot better from that team. No one of our games was convincing in this tournament

Laying blame on one player for the poor results is just stupid especially when he wasn't even the worse player on the pitch

For the bold, bit see comments on BBC sport where the England manager has said Rooney should have played better. The guy is "first pick", yet as the Man U fan has pointed out, Rooney's first touch was shocking, passing was woeful and his dribbling was laborious... As a result, he has to be criticised. You too Pete Dimerty

For the italics bits, what on earth are you talking about??? Nobody has said anything of the sort for either part.

For the bit underlined, everyone here agrees with that.

For the bit about Hodgson, jesus mate, learn some history of the game, look at how the players behaved this time around, and pull the other one.
