Couldn't be a lot worse; and if the judge thinks Deeney's behaviour was bad enough to warrant 10 months, then I think our 'family club' might well terminate his contract.

    Wow.

I don't subscribe to the school of thought that anyone who has ever broken the law should not play football again, although I accept that some do and that this is a serious case.

But even on purely football/financial grounds it's difficult to see how he can be kept. His contract is effectively over in ten months' time, and while he would be out in five, by the time he is back up to speed the season would be almost over.

If he gets out on good behaviour then he could be out before the new year.

Carlos Tevez took a five month holiday in Argentina, during which time he hardly kicked a ball, and then it was two months before he started a game. Just a thought.

I'll leave the discussion about morality to others. But to me, the options seem to be:

    • Sack him after taking a week to make up our minds (due to the takeover situation) and once we have decided giving him a week's notice.
    • Pay him for another year in the hope that he'll be useful for the last two or three months of the season, and that the decision won't do too much commercial damage.

I would not like to make a judgement on what the club should do. They know him and will have to decide if it was a once off aberration, or if there is actually a streak of violence that runs through him.

All footballers need to be aggressive on the pitch to a degree if they are to succeed, but they have to be aware that a High Street is not a football pitch.

I don't want to steer the club in a particular direction on this one french, but surely it's as simple as back him or sack him? Both of those being genuine possibilities, and both having their pros and cons.

It could be a lot worse. As per Section 3(7) of the Public order act 1986.

I don't think NNW that whatever either of us has to say on the matter will get much consideration. You are right, it is back him or sack him and I think that those within the club will have a difficult decision to make. I notice that it is already splitting opinions on the chat sites.

True Dan, but if Magistrates felt it could be a lot worse than this, he wouldn't have gotten bail.

I get the point, but thats not always accurate. A murderer can be let out on bail of the judges think there is no risk of re-offending or absconding. Also, i was simply referring to the length of sentence.

I suppose with some of those rioters getting 1-2 years, it's not so bad.....

I recall us having much the same debate over Marlon King. The image of the club and the example set to young supporters are very important for the future of WFC and certainly shouldn't be sacrificed without very good reason.

I don't think many up and coming footballers need the "go to jail and we'll sack you, though another club will pick you up anyway" lesson.

Has the subject moved away from Deeney to Baz? ;)

At least he is unlikely to be around to make a balanced judgement.

This is the latest picture of the pitch, courtesy of Alan Palmer.

There is more grass there now than there was at the end of the season, and it seems to be coming along nicely.

If you are in the area pop in and look, the gates in the corner of the East stand and Rookery are nearly always open.

You're welcome mate. It seems that way, the weather has been kind as well; with a mix of rain and sun but not burning heat.

Next season might be the first in many years where we start with a full squad (i know Deeney is missing, but we still have 3/4 strikers), a decent pitch to play on and financial security!!!
