He was only a a few tenths off the pace, even if he can only look after his tyres a little better it'll be an advantage. May be an interesting race for a change.

Well Ferrari seemed to be very quick on high fuel and particularly fast on the medium tyre. Unfortunately that makes it likely he'll be in traffic for the whole race, making tyre management very difficult.

I meant to post to this thread yesterday:

As qualifying continued, it became clear that Vettel had some time in hand; but that Pole lap was something special! Mark Webber (starting 19th) was very philosophical about his dire weekend and lack of practice, but even so, I'm sure he'd have expected to get his Red Bull into Q2 if he'd had DRS working!

    Some surprises:
Both Ferrari's failing to get into Q3 must be something to do with di Montezemolo stalking the pits! The boss instils fear in people when things are not going well: this even includes the pipsqueak supposedly running the FIA… (who, for the sake of his own credibility, should have had more sense than to be seen in a Ferrari garage).

McLaren were not looking very strong to me but Hamilton seems genuinely surprised to find himself on the front row. On the other hand, Button was clearly despondent at being 10 places further down the grid.

I expected more from Mercedes (as per my punt on both drivers for Pole in Genji's Betting Game). Once again, like Red Bull, McLaren, Williams and Sauber, there is an unhealthy grid gap between their drivers. Renault must be celebrating their 4th and 5th places with Grosjean, in particular, having an impressive weekend so far. I thought Force India's di Resta would do better than 10th but instead, he finds himself two slots behind team mate Hulkenberg.

Maldonado is clearly very quick and tends to get good starts. But despite his pace, there have been moments when he's looked a bit hot-headed this weekend. I sense something of an 'all or nothing' mentality in him, so his 3rd place on the grid might be a problem for Hamilton…

And finally, a word for Kovalainen who's been threatening to get into Q2 for some time now. Well done! However, I think it's a shame the qualifying format encouraged Caterham not to bother with what they'd qualified for!

N.B. the above has been copied from my posting of it in the wrong thread. It was written immediately after qualifying and takes no account of subsequent discussion in this thread.

Rosberg just mentioned 1 stop may be possible so Ferrari may try it.

"I've been talking to Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery and he thinks the high temperatures mean that a one-stop strategy is now 'impossible', and it will be two or three stops. What Sebastian Vettel decides to do will be crucial in determining other people's calls."

Massa's just said it'll be between 2 and 3 stops, but that assumes he's telling the truth.

I think thats Hamiltons max speed, everyone around him will have lighter cars due to the Renault engine.

Whats the odds on Lotus telling Kimi to crash to cause a SC for Grosjean to win?
