What do both Sunderland and Newcastle have to do, to make that next step of competing with the top six and the glory that it could bring to both clubs......or are we so far behind the likes of Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal etc that its never going happen. Are both teams just going to be middle of the road clubs where we are just happy to be in the Premier League instead of fighting for European Places.
And have Managers that you trust with the money is just as important , dont think i would trust bruce if i were the board
We (Newcastle) are supposed to have ã35m to spend in the summer. If we spend that wisely we'll be able to compete for sixth, which is usually a place in Europe. One you're in Europe that's the stepping stone for attracting better players as well as more lucrative sponsors. It's all about getting the initial breakthrough and then building on it wisely to stay there. Sunderland have a similar squad in terms of quality. You have a lot more deadwood though and I imagine you'll have to sell before you buy in the summer. I'd say you're further away from Europe than you were 12 months ago. Bruce was talking about "shopping in Harrods" and then spent the money on ****e. You might disagree but from the outside looking in it seems as if all your best signings recently have been on loan.
If Keane hadn't wasted money on the likes of Healy, Ferdinand, McCartney, Reid and many others they would be able to spend it now and push on. Newcastle have chance to spend good money and need to spend it wisely, like Sunderland too. Assuming we both stay up, which is not certain yet.
come on mate................ if keane hadn't wasted money..............move on man............done and dusted mate........can't change it.........
Sorry mate but don't agree that ã35m will get you 6th place and i'm not wumming when i say this but lets see where we both finish then decide what you need to do before splashing the cash. For example, ã35m would get you Andy Carroll, would he get you into 6th place? no chance, ã24m would buy you Darren Bent, again, no chance. ã35m would maybe get you a top 10 finish and then you can progress at a steady rate until you become like Everton or Liverpool but that's a step too far right now for both NE teams.
No one, my point was, what does ã35m get you these days? one Andy Carroll, 1.5 Darren Bents, you must admit that both nE teams need some drastic investment to get to and maintain 6th position.
Gameiro , Kranjcar , Wolfswinkel , Sakho and Taiwo would probably cost 35m. Add that to our top players , and you've got a top 6 team mate.
10 Cheik Tiotes 5.8 Jose Enriques 6 Joey Bartons My point is, we can let the much richer teams buy the stupidly expensive and overpriced players. Meanwhile, we can scout well and uncover the hidden gems which provide a lot of quality for much less cost. In my opinion, that's the only sustainable way to do it - especially with the financial fair play rules coming in.
ã35 can get you Hatem Ben Arfa, Cheik Tiote, Rafael Van Der Vaart, Peter Odemwingie, Hugo Rodallega, Asamoah Gyan and even James Perch (cough) so like AG said, if it's spent wisely we should be looking towards the top 6. Graham Carr is our 12th man, he's picked out some right belters and i expect him to find some more in the summer.
Look at Everton, you dont necessarily need shed loads of money to succeed. Moyes has struggled with no funds, Arteta, Cahill etc all out injured and the belief and motivation he instills in that group of players is unbelievable! They might even catch Liverpool into 6th place. Like many of you have been saying, spending wisely and good managemnet is key but having the group of players playing as a team and willing to battle for one another is paramount.
After watching my club spend over the past few years I come down on the wise side, I would say wise we have not been. We seem to have bought far to many very good players who cant play our style, or in the prem or be a team, could be why Ricky bit the dust.
I dont see us getting the 35 miliion, some of it but not all. Both clubs have to buy wisely which both clubs are guilty in the past of not doing. We are a long way from Europe but If Ashley backs Pardew we could get onto the first stepping stone.
I think that even if we (Newcastle) buy wisely this summer, the top 6 will still be out of our reach next season, although I would hope that we would be in the top 8-10. Liverpool, Everton and Villa have all had poor season's by their standards and I think that they will all be stronger next year. Hopefully if we spend our money well, and see a couple of our younger players really challenging for a place in the starting line up, next season will be another step in the right direction. As for Sunderland, well, this is a bit more complicated. On the face of it Bruce has assembled a pretty decent squad. But some of this squad are only with you on loan and so Bruce has to make quite a few signings in the summer. Your end of season collapse is a strange thing. Exactly the same thing happened last year and I wonder what Bruce does when the going gets tough. He looks as if he has aged about 10 years this season and seems to be struggling to deal with the stress of managing.
As stated previously the gulf between the top five clubs and the rest is substantial.Liverpool have the experience and history of being a top 4 club, and with the acquistion of Carrol and Suarez are in poll position to bridge that gap. On current form it seems that we were punching way beyond our weight earlier in the season.Nevertheless our aspirations for next season must be to be the best of the rest and a long overdue cup run.I suspect Short will demand this and that our managers fate is contingent on a top ten finish this year.At this point it is very hard to be optimistic. A top ten finish this season for Newcastle would be remarkable and leave them in a very similar position to us. We are Sunderland and it is futile to resist.
Everton are not a top 6 team mate, but i see your point, Everton are probably the best of the rest but you have to go that extra bit to get top 6.
Top 6 are Man U, Chelski, Arseanal, Spuds, City and Liverpool. The only one that seems like it may be dropping out any time soon is Liverpool, but I'm not sure if I can see Everton realistically bidding for a CL place.
