No real surprises at Villa Park...

    ...we were under-strength, had no real outlet up front as hard as Ranger tried, he simply isn't good enough yet. Lovenkrands only had a couple of chances but really should have buried that late header.
    Joey Barton got distracted by being the captain in my opinion and his passing suffered as a result.
    Steve Harper was a rock for us and along with the excellent Jose Enrique, was unlucky to end up on the losing side. The Colo experiment didn't really work but I understand why Pardew tried it - he didn't have many other options.

    I think if we'd had a full strength 11 today we would have beaten Villa... that said, they really should have had a penalty after Steven Taylor pushed Bent over and again Bent was unfortunate as his 'offside' goal was disallowed.

    On balance I think Villa did enough to win it but they couldn't have complained if we'd nicked a draw towards the end as they simply did not dominate the game or keep us quiet enough.

    Fair play to the lads for a brave effort but there were too many average performers today...

    IMO

    Good performers - Harper, Guti and Guthrie(Yes I know).
    Average - Simpson, Willo, Colo(to a certain extent), Saylor, Enrique, Ranger, Loverman and Barton.

    Decent first half and **** second. Overall disappointed but consedering our lack of options through injuries and suspensions, it was always going to be a tough evening and it surely showed!

    Good performance Enrique and Harper

    Gutierrez was shocking, so was Guthrie and Simpson had his worst game for a while.

    Agree Joker, but I think some of Enrique's passing was very poor and he gave the ball away a lot, unusually.

    Yes Enrique was below his usual standards today but I think everyone's got to remember that Enrique isn't match fit yet.

    It was a weird first ten minutes, Guthrie seemed to be playing well and Enrique was having a stinker - normal order was restored after that short period though.

    What's all this 'him not being happy talk' anyway?

    The guy doesn't have to smile 24/7 on the pitch, in fact i've rarely seen him smile on the pitch and i don't think its because he's unhappy (although when your losing and the teams not playing very well then you would have the right to be unhappy) maybe he's just concentrating on the game like players do.

    Steven Taylor looked like what he is today, a player well short of match practice. He was caught napping a few times early on. Was much happier when Colo and Williamson were restored to CB.
