Like that stopped Carroll from going to a team that finished 8th whilst you got 5th place in the league?
Bit naieve to think football players and clubs consider taking less money cause of their ambitions, to be honest

Well personally I'd rather we use our approach and have the potential to pay less for a player, even if they hold firm and won't accept a penny less than their asking price we can still cover all the bases before we either do or don't bid the full amount. Have you ever heard of haggling?

It's the smart way to do business rather than chucking cash at every player that we want. We are in no rush, the transfer window hasn't even opened officially yet.

At the time we sold Carroll to Liverpool they looked like the more likely bet to finish higher than us, what with their reputation as top 4 contenders and the cash they were spending on players.

He went to the club that looked more ambitious on paper, didn't turn out that way though.

I think most players move for both reasons, ambition AND more money, the two generally come hand in hand though so it's hard to really back that statement up.

We Dutch are the masters of haggling, bargaining and being cheapskates.

Bit naieve to forget our greatest number 9... A man who turned down more cash and guaranteed trophies to play for his beloved Toon.. Or even Le Tissier. There are players out there believe me.

Well congratulations on that, but none of this really detracts from my original point. Even if we were to negotiate up to within 10% of the asking price of a player, that would still be better than paying the full price straight away.

The Dutch obviously prefer a swift process in business but football is a different kind of business, theres a lot more factors to be taken into account in the negotiation process.

I know, i know, i'm just saying you shouldn't get your hopes up.Things have changed since the Shearer era. For example, Kuyt had the option to go back to his home club, Feyenoord. The club that gave him his career. Instead he has signed with Fenerbace for 2 seasons because he didnt want his salary cut in half so Feyenoord could pay his wages.

We're the straight to business type of people. When it's time to do business we don't beat around the bush, we say what we think we have to say and nothing more. There's no chit-chatting or time for formalities. What you see is what you get. We are no fixed on our own price, but if you start bidding low, we just laugh and let you run around a couple of times, dance a little before we get really down to business.

Exactly what happened this week with Ashley. 10 million euros? Come back tomorrow with a better offer. Next day, 11 million? Interresting really, go home, give it some sleep and come back. Three days later, 12 million you say, now we're getting somewhere. 18 million or lower with added clausules, think about it, come back tomorrow.

Skynews in 3 days: Toons bid 12 million pounds

NUFC: "Hi, we'd like to buy Tiote for £3.5m and sell him off 3 years later for £25m... can you fax over his player registration?"
Twente: "Works for us, I'll send it now..."
NUFC: "Much obliged, kind sir... say 'Hi' to Schteve for me..."

Agree with this. For every van Nistelrooy or Klass Jan Huntelaar there is a Mateja Kezman, Bryan Ruiz or Afonso Alves.

Read my post on the first page, clubs hit the jackpot sometimes, like Spurs did with Van der Vaart for 8 million quid. Or Arsenal with Van Persie(3 million)

I agree you shouldn't start at what you're willing to pay for a player.

But 3.5 mil is a joke of a bid, and just makes us looks like a bunch of tards.

Play hard ball when clubs are after our players, but when we're going after someone at least make a half respectable bid.

Personally I prefer Newcastle trying to sign decent players for lower prices. They will have a limit they will be willing to go to depending on his situation and potential, and if they don't match it they will move on to other targets.

It took about 2 years or so to get Cisse's price down, but we were patient and got him when he was within our bracket.

It is still the start of the Summer madness, so no need to panic buy and throw 35million at a striker when we don't really need to. The alternative is the Liverpool situation of throwing massive money at players that the media seem to rate for a couple of months and it turns out they were just in form for a bit and nothing special.

Think we will get him if we can haggle to within the right sort of price bracket.

Not sure I would want to pay more than 10 million for a Dutch striker though, while there has been obvious success stories of dutch players forging great careers in the premier league, there are others who have had a lot of trouble adapting.

Think we are trying to haggle in the hope we can knock money off the price. The other team will deliberately say a higher price than they want in the hope of getting more money than the actual asking price.

    Ashley "There you are."
    Twente "Wait a minute."

    Twente "This bloke won't haggle."
    Large man "Won't haggle???"
Ashley "All right... do we have to?"
Twente "Now look. I want fifteen for him."
Ashley "I, I just gave you fifteen."
Twente "Now are you telling me that's not worth fifteen?"
    Ashley "No."
Twente "Look at his youtube highlights - see the quality, that's none of yer Heskey."
Ashley "All right, I'll give you fourteen then."
Twente "No, no, no. Come on. Do it properly."

Ashley "But you just said it was worth fifteen."
Twente "Oh dear, oh dear. Come on. Haggle."
Ashley "All right, I'll give you six."
Twente "That's more like it. Six!? Are you trying to insult me? Me? With a poor dying grandmother...Six!?!"
Ashley "All right, I'll give you nine."
Twente " Now you're getting it. Nine?! Did I hear you right? Nine? He cost me eleven. You want to ruin me?"
    Ashley "thirteen."
Twente "No, no,. You go to eleven now."
Ashley "All right, I'll give you eleven."
    Twente "Eleven, are you joking?"
Ashley "That's what you told me to say."
    Twente "Oh dear."
Ashley "Oh Tell me what to say. Please."
    Twente "Offer me ten."
    Ashley "I'll give you twelve."
Twente "He's offering me twelve for this star striker!"
    Ashley "Thirteen."
Twente "Fourteen. My last word. I won't take a penny less, or strike me dead."
    Ashley "Eight."
    Twente "Done!"
