Although the following report in today's Daily Fail doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know, I just found it curious that they and The Mirror only mention a 23 man squad. Have I missed something? Barton's future to be decided soon as QPR's internal investigation into Etihad scuffle draws to an end By SAMI MOKBEL PUBLISHED: 23:00, 21 June 2012 | UPDATED: 23:08, 21 June 2012 Comments (7) Share Joey Barton's future at Queens Park Rangers will become clearer in the next few days as the club conclude their internal investigation into his Etihad Stadium rage. The midfielder was infamously sent off for elbowing Carlos Tevez, aiming a kick at Sergio Aguero and headbutting Vincent Kompany in the final day defeat against Manchester City. Enraged: Joey Barton (centre right) was sent off against Manchester City for clashing with Carlos Tevez Barton has already been hit with a 12 game FA ban for the tantrum and he now seems certain to be punished by the club. The outcome of QPR's in-house investigation is expected to be reached by Monday - and it is understood the probe could even be resolved today. Mark Hughes wants Barton out of the club ahead of the new season and has already decided not to name him in his 23-man Premier League squad if he remains at Loftus Road. Title winners: City beat 10-man QPR to win the Premier League at the Etihad * Club officials have looked into the possibility of sacking Barton for gross misconduct - but it is understood QPR have been advised doing so could leave them in a difficult legal position. It is more likely that Barton will face a heavy fine and be stripped of the club captaincy. * More... Barton confident he'll escape rap for Bank Holiday brawl in Liverpool
Something to do with the number of 'Over 21 Non Home-Grown' players. This is the PL 'Explanation', I'm still none the wiser... http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/fans/faqs/home-grown-player-rule.html
Cheers Sooper, I'm still not 100% either. I thought that last season it was a 25 man squad, but according to your link the rule applied last season.
Makes absolutely no sense to me either. The bit about not being able to have more than 17 overseas players seems simple enough. But I don't see how the bit about therefore "some clubs will have a squad list of 23" makes any sense at all.. Anyway, here is the text: What is the Home Grown Player rule? The Premier League welcomes overseas players but remains aware of the need to sustain the development of home-grown talent. Some of the world's biggest football stars compete in the Barclays Premier League, and while there are benefits in having overseas players in the competition, it is vital long-term youth policies are not affected. Talented individuals can be role models for children and the more skillful players there are in the Barclays Premier League, wherever they are from, the better. To ensure that Premier League Clubs continue to produce top home-grown talent, the 20 Clubs introduced a Home Grown Player rule from the start of the 2010/11 campaign. Clubs cannot name more than 17 non home grown players aged over 21. For example some clubs will have a squad list of 23 because they may have 17 over 21 non home grown players. Visit the 'Squad' section within your selected club's profile to view its Home Grown and U21 players
This should clear things up, showing my age now
Its the fail, more than likely they got it wrong, Ive not seen anything about it changing from 25 to 23.
A-ha! That's cleared everything up. " The vessel with the pestle is the brue that is true, but the chalice from the palace has the pellet of poison. " Cheers Flanners.
So if Barton is not named in the 25 man squad by MH, he'll be lounging around in the reserves on a mega-salary (unless the club find a legal way to reduce his salary on the basis that he has deliberately put himself out of contention for selection by his violent misconduct) until the January transfer window...
