How much is enough?

Discussion in 'Liverpool' started by DirtyFrank, Jun 21, 2012.

  1. If it was £20m for Pepe or Agger then I would be saying '****....Off....!!!', but Skrtel is different for me <ok>

I agree with Agger, the problem with pepe is GK's are similar to defenders in the price for them. I think the most expensive at the moment was Neur but not sure how much, but I think it was around 20 mil paid.

Tough calls really, we want our best here but we want our best committed.

  3. I take your point but you can't discard something because of previous incidents. We have to take each situation in hand and treat them differently. You say Man City reject, I say a wasted talent sat on a bench at a club with a ridiculous amount of riches. At the minute, Man City are not our rivals, the current aim is Champions League football which means competing with the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and possibly Newcastle are. Man City and Man Utd are fighting for league titles, something we are not in a position to do.

IMO, Adam Johnson would improve our squad AND first team. If he can help us get to the next level then he would be a good signing.

  4. The most expensive is still Buffon at £32m. De Gea is second at £18m with Neuer third at £15m <ok>

Skrtel only had 21 appearances because he had a knee injury from October and didn't come back fully till the start of January.

He started every important game in that season he was available and fit for. Man Utd (H) & (A), Real Madrid (H) & (A), Chelsea (H) & (A) in CL and the two games against Everton in the fa cup as the main examples.

  6. Fair enough, maybe I was wrong about that season (do remember him making a good impression when he first joined) but I certainly don't rate him as a top defender and I'd absolutely snap someone's hand off if they offered us £20m. Since it is Man City, £30m would be better <laugh>

This really is all just talk at the moment, but I have to say I'm sick of the merry-go-round of footballers these days. I think continuity is the key to success and wholesale changes every five minutes are more the realm of football manager games than a good way to run a club.
It's obvious to me that there are people on here much more familiar with players from outside the Prem than I am so I won't argue with preferences for a replacement. All I would say is that it's a team game and that anyone coming in is an unknown quantity in terms of compatibility regardless of their prior reputation.
I would prefer us to keep what we have for now and strengthen in the areas that we desperately need to, the ones we've discussed ad nauseum already.
I remember Skrtel looked really good when he first came. Injury set him back but he seems to be recovering his potential again. As for him fouling all the time, there aren't many defenders that don't. I don't think he's given away more penalties or crucial free kicks than average, has he?
