    I'd start him yes.

Miles better than any of our current strikers and him and Welbeck have been impressive alongside each other so far for Utd.

Yes the BBC did a montage yesterday projecting Rooney as the returning hero, directly after he had given an interview stating that it is the team performance that matters not what he does, utterly ridiculous.

This sits right in line with how the media have built up players over the years only for them to fail to deliver each and every time. We never learn.

  4. Sorry, but I simply cannot believe that there are supposedly sensible, intelligent posters on this forum trying to convince me and themselves that Rooney is "England's" best player. He is not. He is a very capable club player, but he has been nothing more than disappointing for England.

    He should not start.

He does things from time to time that make him seem special. He holds down a place at ManU which is not to be underestimated. He can also link midfield and attack better than anyone else (potentially), certainly better than Young* in the France game. Yet at international level he has done nothing to warrant this bizarre saviour tag, and certainly nothing to warrant replacing forwards who have done well in other matches. Let us not forget that the reason he hasn't been playing so far is that he got himself sent off while playing for England. Yes eventually he'll do something special for the national team too, bound to happen if you play him enough, but is it worth giving him ten games for one brilliant one, when you can get a good performance out of someone else on a more regular basis? Certainly it is possible he'll score and do well tonight, but it is equally possible that he will produce one of his South Africa displays and/or get himself sent off. Why take that chance?

    * how bad was Young against Sweden? Let's hope Roy reminds him about tracking back tonight.

Rooney is our best player by far,imo he brings more to the team than just being picked to score goals,he pulls defenders out of positions, drop's deep to get the ball, can pass 40yard's+ as well as Gerrard can,and even helps out in Defence

  7. So, what you are saying is, that we should play Rooney because of the hope factor that he brings?

Crouch aside, we haven't had many strikers who reproduce (or better) their club form at international level. Rooney, is better than Welbeck, Carroll and Defoe (though Welbecks been very impresive) and on that basis has to start. I don't believe he's our best player but certainly our best striker.

thats what he was and is described as by the media who are totally going over the top with his return ..let me remind you..from suspension due to his petulant nature...if he does well great but i always have an issue with anyone who the media build up to be a saviour..ive played football myself and i think it is one of the most disrespectful things to do with regards the rest of the team.

i agree with you over the saviour bit,but that is the british press, the same people who load pressure on the English team by saying we can win the world cup, when it's clear we can't,but you still have to play your best players.

fair point....but i think if anything we need someone at the back because we conceded 2 weak goals against Sweden...attack seems ok..however a good player can only improve things..or so you would think.
Dont get me wrong i do like Rooney..he is a team player..but i fear that due to the love in with him...the 'team' that seems to have bonded well may be disrupted..having said that he has been training with them etc..but still it would kind of piss on my bonfire and take a little chunk out of my confidence if someone just walked into the team at my expense if id played a role in getting a draw and a win in the last 2 games.

Its a bit of a myth that he's done nothing for England. He hit the ground running as a teenager in 2004, he was the youngest ever scorer in the competition for a bit if i remember. But for his injury i think we would have got passed portugal.
For 2006 he was injured. He probably shouldn't have been picked, but he was, underperformed and ended up getting red carded out of frustration.
    2008 we didn't qualify
    2010 - the whole squad was ****e.

This is possibly the first time since 04 that we've been at a competition with the squad in a half decent state AND a FIT wayne rooney. He has to start for me.
If we qualify from the group our only chance of further progression is from individual brilliance. We won't be italy/spain as a team let alone whoever might follow. However, a dogged defensive performance and a genius moment gives us a chance. Which england players could give us that genius moment? Probably only 2 for me, Rooney and Gerrard.

I'm thinking a draw, with England scoring the last goal very near the end of the game. Second pick is Ukraine picking up a very late winner. I'd be surprised if England wins easily.

i want England to win but i have a feeling that they are going to get turned over.....out of the 3 matches...this one is getting hype...and usually that is an indicator of England's demise....

on a sidenote i need to know where the red fits in? i can understand the white and the ermm blue.

626 minutes without a goal. Red card two world cups ago that led to England's elimination. Red card ruling him out of the first two games of the Euros.

He is a very good player for Man U. But what reason is there to think his form for England will turn around? That they're doing well without him? Isn't that a reason not to play him?

I wouldn't have put him in the squad. But the best move, I think, would be to plan to bring him off the bench this game. If England do well, he won't be needed, and can have a low tension introduction. If they need a goal, he's the second best bet behind Walcott off the bench.
