A day without music is a dark day indeed...I have a very wide range of tastes - 70's Punk, Motown, Reggae, 70's Rock, Southern US Rock, Opera, Electronic, Trance, Dubstep, D&B (only some light stuff though), Garage, Classical, , and loads of bits and pieces like Traditional Balinese. Best of the best, is going to see live bands - going to see Faithless tonight and Jamiroquai next Friday...But there are some great new bands playing in local venues at the moment as well - The Flag in Watford, The Horn in Snalbans, JJ's in Hemel are great places
Hmm have come into this a bit late... I guess better mention my music taste first! I have a pretty wide range of music tastes! Not a huge fan of RnB, or what they call it these days... but can go from listening to Eminem on my iphone, then put on the most relaxing classical songs 'ever'. A lot of my music tastes stems from what my Dad had in his car, so Dire Straits, the Who, Billy Joel, the Kinks. Other bands seem to come and go, but some stick with me... I have to admit, I do like a lot of Oasis' stuff, I think Adele has an amazing voice and will always like the Beatle. Otherwise it is individual songs rather than bands... Otis Redding - Dock o' The Bay, Creed - My Sacrifce, Evananescence - My Immortal, Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone, Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars are just some songs I can listen to over and over again! I like most genres of music... rock, indie, motown, jazz, ska and yes, there is a time and place for classical!! Last year I did Glasto and loved it, and have also seen EJ, Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi in concert! I listen to music each day, and as someone said before, if I was to name my two main interests, it would be football and music! As for Twin Peaks... Love that programme!!
continued from yesterday...Vivaldi, Dave Edmunds, David Bowie, Los Lobos, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Smetana, Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, David Lindley, Rev Gary Davis, Billie Holiday...the list goes on...and on...and on...
This is very true. Adele is absolutely brilliant, and really deserves all the recognition she is receiving. Going to Glastonbury this year and praying she will be there. Word in the industry is she is not keen on festivals. Hopefully this is not true. Which one? John Lennon? (sorry, I know it is stupid)
I had a ticket for this year's too but never paid the balance! Can't really afford it, plus not overly impressed with the line up so far and especially the headliners (I know it's not just about the music... but it helps). The only band I've seen so far confirmed that I'd want to see was Mumford and Sons! haha whoops!! Yes John was alright... But can't beat Ringo!!
As for Adele... over Christmas I saw her on Jools Holland and when she sung Somone Like You, had tingles down my spine!!
Yer, the acts confirmed for Glastonbury this year aren't particularly great in my opinion. I am seriously looking forward to Elbow though. Absolutely brilliant, particularly their live performance of One Day Like This with the BBC Concert Orchestra. I love music that combines orchestras and the like. As for Adele, ever since I heard this, I have been a fan: This will be the song for the first dance of the new Mr. and Mrs Wooter at my wedding next year.
View attachment 1915 Great choice I always liked Chasing Pavements... But I think it was Best for Last that made me take notice of her! Have the 'Special Edition' of her new album with 4 live track son - Seriously can't tell the difference!! Elbow is a very good shout too! Last year there were a few acts I was dubious about - like Dizzee Rascal and Scissor Sisters, but were great entertainment - Gorillaz I was kind of looking forward to, but were awful! Muse was my highlight, but thoroughly enjoyed Lightning Seeds... But I think lying in the sun with a pint of cider in my hand helped!!
Ok, unless one has a very narrow musical taste, I think the hardest thing that I sometimes think about is my seven records for Desert Island Discs. I must have that one and that one, but then my list goes to about twenty. To cut it down to seven is really difficult. I would definately have an Elton in there because I think he is a fantastic musician and the association with Watford is so strong. But which one? Just try it, it is not easy.
John Lennon was once asked if he thought Ringo was the best drummer in the world. He replied that Ringo wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles.......
But it's all been done before, and generally better. There are the occasional talents cropping up, (I like Vampire Weekend for example), but almost anything current and decent has been influenced to the point of plagiarism by what has gone before. There comes a point in most musics where it will not get significantly better. Classical music I would suggest hasn't really come up with anything listenable since the early 20th Century. With Jazz you can almost forget anything post Parker and Coltraine. Nobody is suggesting that Big Band and Swing afficionados should move on from Miller, Goodman and Count Basie, yet with 'pop' and 'rock' there is an expectation that it should always throw up fresh product. I think that well has now run just about dry.
It'll happen to you, too, MadMoose. It'll be your waistline first, but when that goes - watch out ;-).
Is it embarrassing to play Bobby Darin's 'Mack the Knife' really loud in the car, and then sing along for all you're worth? Not me, obviously. It's... a friend of mine... I was just wondering, that was all...
Ah yes, that famous friend SLB ...not embarrassing at all, but if i see and hear you, i'll pretend i don't know you
Harrowhorn, Tommy Cooper pic on a music thread? I went up into the attic and found a Stradivarius and a Rembrandt. Unfortunately Stradivarius was a terrible painter and Rembrandt made lousy violins. What a funny man!
