Lloydy there is a big world out there , I believe I mentioned topical issues as well , when we started here we had some pretty heated and very interesting debates on capital punishment , should we get involved with libyan /iraq conflict . This sort of thing was carried over from the old 606 and has unfortunately died.
There are some stimulating and newsworthy things happening but it seems it is easier to change a word!
NNW is at least trying with his straws from the past series.
I reiterate the fact that I know its close season , people are on their hols etc,However as one of the better boards on this site surely we can do a bit better.
everything seems to have got a bit samey and if like me ,you have the attention span of a goldfish,it gets boring pretty quickly.

Then if it's debate you want, why haven't you tried to start one? We could continue the capital punishment one - it certainly hasn't been done to death, as that apparently is illegal. ;)

Or how about 'Was the world right to revile Hitler and his cronies as war criminals - putting some of them to death?'

I ask that in light of a recent decision in the Appeal court to quash a murder conviction from 18 years ago - a Scottish teenager was found guilty of murdering a stranger in a London street. The conviction was overturned after his legal team convinced the court that he was, at the time, in the early stages of schizophrenia and therefore his responsibilty was diminished. Given that Hitler was a full blown manic depressive, should he not be afforded the same?

Perhaps we could organise a 'Debate of the week' thread?

Spot on BB - plenty of opportunity. How about charging Scots to cross the border if they want to come down for the England v Scotland game next August? The FA could recover some money for the missing turf and goalposts! <yikes>

We could even join two debates together with that one. Who agrees with the heavy sentences handed down to 'rioters' for what what would normally be viewed as relatively trivial offences? Given that jails are currently bursting at the seams and that electronic tagging is an apparent waste of time, if this weeks news is to be believed - should we create some space in the jails by bringing back the death penalty for crimes such as murder and *****philia?

Think lethal injection is more humane , although if it was a hanging ,it could be turned into an event with stalls etc ,I`m thinking possible business opportunities for the burger van boys, Ice cream vans etc , you could have betting on how long it takes the victim to die, There could be a league table awarding style points on the final drop !

Personally I am against the death sentence as I actually see it as an easier option - I would lock the bastards up for life, just let them out for a bit of exercise. No TV, no mobile phones, no Internet. But life should be life and they should rot until they get buried in Potters Field.

Some of the sentences for the rioters caught stealing, but the offences are not a straight comparison. Someone lifting a bottle of water when the shop is open is not the same as someone lifting it during a riot when the shop has been smashed open - that is looting. If we consider capital punishment, then perhaps we should follow the example of the USA who has capital punishment - they shoot looters on sight!

I like it Aberdeen - I would add all convicts who have abused their tag curfew. I would ship them to the Falklands to help build up the infrastructure and do the donkey work...let them abuse their tag curfew as much as they want!

We need some more of the Francis Drake about us - he would have crossed the channel in a few rowing boats and nicked the French fleet.

Well, if the death penalty is a non-starter how about:

    1) We find another island for the Falkland Islanders,
    2) create the required infrastructure and move them all there lock, stock and barrel,
    3) empty our prisons onto the Falklands,
    4) tell the Argies that they can have their beloved Malvinas back.

I'll get the Atlas out - there must be hundreds of possibilities out there.

OFH - When the Scots get independence we could send all the Scottish convicts back and that would empty a few jails.

Not really - we'd reciprocate and end up maintaining the status quo. ;)
