I think Moyes is fairly balanced in that sense. The players like him because they respect him. But yeah, I'd rather Jol than Ramos, 'Arry than AVB and Moyes than whatever other flavour of the month continental manager everyone has decided we must get. It's not so much that they're soft touches but that they're able to communicate with players on their level rather than creating aura where players feel they can't communicate with the manager or that he's distant to the everyday running of the squad. In terms of both manager and training I believe it's evolution not revolution we want.
Mourinho and Wenger were both fluent in English and had studied the game for years, mainly because they didn't have successful playing careers and in mourinhos case he worked under the late great bobby robson so using them to back up your case is sightly shady as clearly these two are "special" cases which is backed up by the great success they have had as managers. As for Ferguson, he was scottish (just incase you forgot) and understanding the english game is much the same as the Scottish game, its British football which varies in terms of talent but overall its the same nature, same passion, same physical aspect......its just the scots are crap and the english arent ha! Plus, he had already achieved great success with Aberdeen and managed Scotland and was a fairly successful player so its rather bizarre you talk about ferguson in relation to "foreign" managers!
If you have a manager like Fergie you don't need a DOF because in effect that is what he is. All good managers recognise their own shortcomings and employ others to fill those gaps. The DOF system allows you to employ a good manager (The DOF) and a good coach/tactician (Manager) at the outset. Thus the control is in the hands of the owners/board from the start. It's fine if the board get the appointments right but as they often don't know much about the 'game' it is risky.
Aye. I understand the concept of the system but in relation to ourselves, we have tried it twice with no success and we all saw the problems between damien and jol so its no coincidence that our most successful time in the league has come from the "old school" method under arry. Now arry clearly has his faults but I hope this new direction isn't back to the dof model.
I think Levy mistakenly thought that the DoF would be a mainstay that wouldn't need sacking but as we saw with Comolli, if you don't lay some of the blame at the DoFs feet you end up with a broken system repeating itself over and over. If we hire a DoF it should be as a chief scout kind of role with the manager having the main say on buying and selling players whilst Levy handles negotiations and budgets.
Still is Scottish, i think Tbh, i'm struggling to understand him more and more each year. He could be italian for all i know now
Ok Fair points, but we're diverting from the main discussion point of this article now. You claimed Moyes, AVB, Martinez etc.. are uninspiring choices. There are plenty of examples of managers who have come into clubs with little expectation and surprised. Ferguson for United, Moyes for Everton, Redknapp for Spurs. Let's not write off the potential targets before they've even been given a chance.
Where are your odds from mate? Moyes now 2/5? Paddy Power were offering 5/4 only an hour ago when I last checked, is that a sign that perhaps the bookies know something we don't? Perhaps we've made our move already??
i think he's actually lengthened. I think i saw 1/7 on him last night right after it happened. I did wonder whether Ledders had been taking his coaching badges or not. Probably a bit soon for him. Parker AND King?
Well do you believe Moyes, AVB and Martinez are inspiring choices and the type of managers to keep our players, get them excited about the future and improve on what redknapp has done? if you do then ill applaud you if it turns out your right! I would love a manager to come in, unite the squad, get us playing great football and get 4th at least but out of the names i just cant see who is capable of this.
I think you might be underestimating the esteem Moyes is held in within the game. I think a Moyes appointment would very much make players want to stay. I also think it could make Modders think its worth another year to find out. These players all talk to each other, they know who is good and who isn't. Modders is also spending considerable time with Jelavic at the moment
I honestly believe that they are. Maybe not inspiring in that they come out and give frequent comments to the media about everything that goes on in the club, but inspiring because they have achieved great results with teams punching above their weight. As a club looking to finish top 4 with the cash rich Chelsea, City and Liverpool aswell as Man Utd and Arsenal, I like the idea of going for someone who knows the game and may just punch above their weight.
