I sort of answered it above. I referred to it as a blokey feel good film but ultimately it relates to that camaraderie that we have with our mates down the pub for example. Women don't seem to get it hence why they try to curb our habbits.

Essentially it comes down to the generalization that men have a core group of best friends and women have hundreds of acquaintances. The film appeals to that side of the male psyche while allowing plenty of time to absorb the absurdities and small victories that the central characters experience.

Beautifully filmed with great cinematography but that escape still irks me....

My brother (who has NO taste) recommended Shawshank to me. At first I thought it was just another prison movie but it drew me in. A bit like Matt said, it's essentially a platonic male love story. Not sure I agree with you Matt though re male conversations. Most pub chat is fun bollocks. .. maybe I need new friends or a new pub!!

But we allow ourselves the time to talk bollocks without passing judgement often.

Watch this space QLr - I'll wait until this one has run its course and the launch the next.

I'm planning to bombard you all with stats and a bit of randomness re results at the end.

ATM this is still OK and I love film so love the ensuing banter.

There have been a few exceptional films that have caught my eye since the 90s although the industry seems more reliant in rehashes of old stuff and cartoons while simultaneously overloading the screens with blockbusters so that smaller gems don't get large exposure.

Above mentioned No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood are superb. I had a cinema card a few years back and saw great movies like The Lives of Others, Intacto, Transformers (no sequals please), Memento, Donnie Darko, City of God, Amores Perros, 22 grams to name a few.

Check out anything by Sam Rockwell and you won't go far wrong- Cipher, Moon, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind are all worthy.

Incidentally, only saw Once Upon a Time in the West for the first time about 3 years ago and watched it twice on the bounce - excellent on any score.

Is that because we are all old gits then ?

The prequals ruined Star Wars (absolute classics to that point) and the sequals ruined the Matrix for me.

I robot was done well though.

Agree about the Matrix. The first one was fantastic and very thought provoking. The next 2 were absolute ****e and a waste of time watching.

Also forgot to mention 'Falling Down'. When I first watched it I was in a pretty dark place and could relate to the main character so much. Ended up watching it 20 times.
