Joey Barton made the news this week by claiming he was the best midfielder in England. I like him and a lot of Newcastle's success this season has been down to him - but he's not the best midfielder in England.

Maybe he could get in the squad, but you've got Steven Gerrard - who IS the best midfielder in England - Frank Lampard, who scores goals; Scott Parker, who has been outstanding and deserves his chance; and Jack Wilshere, who will be a mainstay for the rest of his career.

And Barton strikes me as someone who wouldn't enjoy being a reserve; he wants to play every game and doesn't like it when he's not involved.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gerrard? He's been average this season apart from a couple of MOTM performances but even then I don't think he's the best CM in England. That surely has to be Wilshere? Lampard is getting on a bit and Parker's been outstanding this season with a poor West Ham side and could potentially end up being a 1 or 2 season wonder? Why couldn't he do what he's doing at 'Ham when he was at Chelsea or Newcastle? I wonder.

OK Wilshere has been outstanding and better than Barton. Parker somewhat but I'll say there on par. Lampard's done OK but he hasn't been outstanding and Nolan's passed him in terms of goals scored. Gerrard? Please. He's been very average this season.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Barton thinks he's the best English midfielder in the country this season.

I think he's one of the best.

Will this enable him to get into the England squad.

    No.

    Capello is in charge.

  3. The fat **** just doesn't get that Gerrard and Lampard are only good when they're in form, and they haven't been this season.

Wilshere is the best midfielder for me
and then Gerrard when he's fit and then Barton
we all know he should be in the squad
but we all also know he will never get another cap whilst the set up remains the way it is

Gerrard is nearly three years Barton's senior, is nowhere near as fit and is out for the rest of this season at least. Lampard is well and truly past it and has NEVER done it for England, regardless of how good he is for Chelsea. Wilshere is getting there I admit but he ain't the finished article yet. Parker is on a level par I reckon but has only came into his own in the last ten games or so, Barton has been unreal for two whole seasons.

    Can't stand Merson, absolute twat.

I never take any notice of what Merson says, the guy is a complete clown.

Enjoy seeing him on soccer saturday though because he is such a buffoon. I am sure that the producers just keep him there for comedy value because his opinion and assessment of performances is ****e.

  7. I think Gerrard, Lampard and Wilshere are all better than Barton, but only when they're on form!

In my opinion, Parker and Barton should get a shot together -

    -----Barton-----------Parker------------

    Lennon--------Wilshere-----------A.Johnson

    ---------------Rooney------------------

But lampard hasnt been scoring goals. Without the goals he is garbage, how many goals has he scored this season discounting penalties? Nolan plays the same role and has scored 12 from open play.
So what you are saying Merson is that Nolan should be a starter for England. I agree :)

**** me Tash, I never knew you were capable of speaking anything other than mistruths, but for the 2nd time ever I agree with you. <yikes>

Edit: ****ing Hell! I'd even give your recommended team a shot, bar Lennon (who I'd swap for Ashley Young). <yikes> <yikes>

Dont worry, with him averaging 20,000 words a day on here its only natural that eventually he will string a sentance together that people can agree with.

'Monkeys', 'room', 'infinite time', 'typewriter' and and 'entire works of Shakespeare' are words that spring to mind. <laugh>

Reading the full article, I pretty much agree with everything he says. The only thing I disagree with is the Gerrard/Lampard comments. Barton has been better than both this season and Capello won't stick to his word and play the form players, he goes with the big names.

Oh, and I disagree with his score prediction obviously ;)

Gerrard: injured and done bugger all this season.
Lampard: scores goals but so does Nolan, so why isnt he above Lampard if that is the only reason you can produce to justify his selection.
Parker: Genuinely in good form, fair enough
Wilshere: Good prospect but shouldnt be an automatic choice for his career, thats disgraceful, he should earn the right to be in every squad through good form
Barry: Merson doesnt even attempt to defend him.

Barton: scores and creates goals and is at very least the 3rd most in form Englishman, Parker and Wilshere could be argued to be in better form by some people.

I'm not arsed that Barton isn't in the England team. If he keeps putting performances in like he is (while not in the England team) then I'd be more than happy for him to stay out of it. It's not as if us having players in the England team has benifitted us majorly in the past.

As for Bartons recent comments, whats the point. Play your football, keep out of the headlines and sign on the dotted line good sir

Highest scoring midfield in the league and of the English players only Darren Bent has more, and that is by 1.

Fair enough but it seems incredible that as the highest scoring English midfielder in the league his name there isnt the slightest bit of talk of him getting a first cap.
Also, how do Bartons assists rank with other midfielders?
