From the Star and about time....

NEWCASTLE are ready to reward Alan Pardew with a new contract.

And it could see the dual Manager of the Year handed a long-term deal which will keep him at the club well beyond the remaining three-and-a-half years of his current agreement.

Preliminary talks have already started between Toon managing director Derek Llambias and Pardew’s representatives, who are seeking a pay increase for their man following the Toon’s exploits last season.

Owner Mike Ashley, who bought Newcastle five years ago, is determined to bring stability to a club which, in the past, has created more headlines off the pitch than on it.

Key players, including skipper Fabricio Coloccini and keeper Tim Krul, have been handed long-term contracts.

And earlier this week, chief scout Graham Carr was rewarded for his talent spotting abilities with a deal which keeps him with the Geordies until 2020.

Sources claim that deal has not been done in isolation, with Ashley looking to tie down other key employees throughout the club.

While there’s nothing to suggest that Pardew, too, will be offered an eight-year contract like Carr, Ashley sees him as an integral part of Newcastle’s long-term future.

Eyebrows were raised when Pardew came in on a five-year deal in December 2010 but, since then, not only has the 51-year-old won over his critics, he has built up a healthy working relationship with Ashley and Llambias, who don’t expect to work with any other manager while they are at the helm.

Pardew’s current deal is largely incentive-based but his basic salary is understood to be just £1m per year, making him one of the lowest paid managers in the Premier League.

While Pardew has no problem with Ashley’s policy of paying on performances, he believes his basic contract should reflect his current standing.

The Toon chief led Newcastle to fifth place in the table, which earned Europa League qualification.

He also won both the Barclays and LMA Manager of the Year rewards.

Why? He's only produced the goods over 1 season and his record for second seasons isn't one I like the look of. If he can achieve last seasons position (Possibly improve it too) consistently, then tie him down long term, right now though, he's contracted until 2016 which is plenty of time to earn an improved contract and proving you're worth it.

Because forward planning in any kind of business works and a manager committing to the LONG term may encourage others to stick around.
Any manager from season to season is a gamble but the money he is on now is well below what a lot of managers under us in the league get.
If you were working at a firm and you significantly over delivered on expectation wouldn't you ask for a better package? - I for one would.

His second season performance haven't been the best elsewhere... but neither were his European qualification stats..

Id have given it another year to ensure this year was not a fluke before launching into any talks of extensions. Its not like his initial contract was short term.

    Ah well

He committed long term when he became manager with a 5 1/2 year deal. He still has as many years on his contract as most of our players, so that comment isn't really valid.

It is if we want Cabaye and Ben Arfa... and maybe even Ba to sign up for a longer stint (something I want to see).
forward planning and continuity will be key to our future on and off the field IMHO over the next decade.

Nevertheless it's always good to have a healthy debate :)
