Thats my point; they don't tolerate cheats - the decison by the team manager; Dean Richards, was to get off a player having made his substitutions to get another palyer onto the pitch for tactical reasons. I am not saying it was right, but that is what he did and he has just completed his ban. Rugby players take huge hits in the game; they get up and carry on. When someone pushes them in chest, they don't fall down clutchinh their faces trying to get a player sent off as they do in football.

Thankfully, football is learning, though slowly, from rugby; the officials are wired up to communiate, goal line technology is coming in - all from rugby. What we need now to happen is post-match disciplinary for the cheats, fakers and divers that taint the otherwise beautiful game.

Hey, hang on a minute! I know little about American football, but I haven't my five penneth on the Daily Mail yet.
I can't it and it's pretentions to be a serious newspaper. Almost every article is slanted to make some political or other point. The front page often screams stuff like "outrage at...." when the only body foaming at the mouth is the Daily Mail itself. Yet this is the paper that back in thirties proclaimed, "hurrah for the blackshirts" in support of The British Fascists.
Ok, got that off my chest. US footy anyone?

No, but I did. You don't get away with an easy answer. ;)

The papers you highlighted don't [and didn't in the case of TNOTW] aspire to being quality newspapers. Perhaps the Daily Express has a slight pretension, but the other extant papers are comics and don't qualify. To be honest, any newspaper that doesn't report facts without neutrality is one I wouldn't want to read. I also don't want opinion from reporters either. I'll make up my own mind without their help. As the old saying went - just the facts, man/mam.

No newspaper can be truly neutral. Facts are fixed, but what they mean does vary with your personal interests. I would love pensions to double even if child benefits were cut, purely because I am a pensioner and have no children. If that happened, Saga magazine would report it as a good thing, whereas The Mirror would start screaming. The facts are the same but outcome for your readers is different. I have no problem with opinion pieces either. However, I do dislike it when a newspaper turns everything to their agenda even when it is not obviously related.

Rugby is an excellent sport. It's quite simple to understand (of course that will mean watching a game or two, as it would any sport). And as for teams pumping it long, either they're under pressure or their back aren't as good as you'd hope. Much the same as hoofball in football.

And yes, it is quite rough and ready, I've had numerous injuries from it from a demolished AC joint in my shoulder to nerve damage in my shin, but after the match you go back to the club house and have a pint with the opposition and joke over the match, unless, of course you play a rival, then what happens on the pitch carries on upstairs!

Rugby is far better than NFL.

I watch England rugby games (League and Union) as I like to be partisan. I understand the rules apart from some of the more subtle fouls. I like League rugby where you get so many moves (5?) in which to score. Rugby is my third choice behind football and cricket. However, I like most competitive sports and am looking forward to the Olympics where I can develop a sudden interest in a fringe sport. Love the way sailors try to hold position and make a late run for the line (bit like chess). Also got my eye on gymnastics as the British mens team won team gold at the Europeans recently.

A long time ago I remember someone saying:

The Times is read by the people who run the country
The telegraph is read by people who wish the country was run like it used to be
The Express is read by people who think it still is
The Sun is read by people who don't care who runs the country as long as she has got big tits
The Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country (that's a laugh)
The Independent is read by people who want to ruin the country
The Guardian is read by people who want to run the country and when they do they will shoot all of the men
The Mirror is read by the rest

With regards to rubbish media I'm gonna have to throw my hat in the ring for the Telegraph, mainly for this blog entry:

    http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/j...if-this-is-britains-energy-policy-were-toast/

What a load of narrow-minded nonsense!

As for the mail, as long as you realise it's sensationalist and as long as you don't take it too seriously, then it's alright but those are important things to keep in the back of your mind if you read it.

The horoscope section is entertaining though.

I don't so I dunno, but it's very very unlikely that climate change is not happening or not influenced by anthropogenic activities. Furthermore, even if you don't believe in anthropogenic climate change, renewable energy is something that should be encouraged and developed anyway to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels which are only going to go up in price as supplies world-wide dwindle.

Or you can stick your head in the sand and pretend coal, gas and oil are going to last forever.

Or they'll last your lifetime so sod everyone else...that's why Godders and I are blase:laugh: Alternative energy should always be investigated so we are ready for anything, but scare mongering rarely works as people get tired of it and it becomes yesterdays news. I was told when I was young that we were overdue for a new ice age (and we definitely wouldn't survive that!) so perhaps a bit of global warming will offset that.

The Mirror have a columnist who is a republican...it's an opinion and that's fine, but he frequently refers to the Royal Family as Germans as if they have no British blood and weren't born here. It would be considered racist if he referred to a black Briton as a Nigerian or a Kenyan in a derogatory way several generations down the line.
