I thought we could use a dedicated thread for all things related to the carnival of football about to start in Poland and the Ukraine.

England go into the competition with no real pressure, as most England fans - possibly for the first time in a long while - do not rate the current side. Rather predictably, the media are reporting this, in their own inimitable way, as: 'No Pressure on England - Now Let's Go and Win It!'

I personally feel we'll be lucky to escape the group phase. But, if we do, I feel sure we'll be knocked out in the next round.

As a Liverpool supporter, I'm torn between being annoyed that so many of our players are there, (as other teams' fans are - for different reasons!) because it increases the likelihood of injury, and pleased, as it gives our younger players valuable international experience.

I'm not one for predictions - or at least accurate ones - but here are mine:

    Winners: Spain
    Next best teams: Germany, Holland
    (Not so) Dark Horses: Russia

It promises to be a fantastic competition, and, regardless of how England do, I'm sure we'll all enjoy it.

Not a good morning of new to wake up to this morning. Defoe has gone home as his father has died. <peacedove> <rose>

Also other tragic but non Euro 12 related news, Manuel Preciado has died from a heart attack just a day after taking the Villereal job. :(

Sad times. Thoughts with their families. <ok>

  5. My prediction will be that England scrape for the group finishing second before being battered by Spain in the first knockout game. Germany and Holland (if possibly) to both make the final with France making at least the semi's.

Dark horse prediction: Russia <ok> (I didn't just copy CCC, honest <whistle>)

    Winner - Germany
    Next Best - Spain, Holland
Dark Horse (I'll call them that because they aren't favourites) - France
England out at the group stages, Gerrard, Carrol and Johnson the only goal scorers with Downing with all 3 assists. John Terry to be red carded for racist attack on Ashley Young.

A lot of people rating France's chances. I suppose after so many unbeaten friendly games that's perhaps warranted, but I'm not convinced by the French team, for some reason.

Some good shouts for best player / top goal scorer. ;) I'll wait until after the first game before I make a prediction on that I think as it's a bit easier after you see how players step up and fit in their national side - for e.g. at the last world cup it was obvious that Muller was going to have a good competition after a game or two. (is that cheating?):emoticon-0112-wonde

I see the racism thing has reared its ugly head already with Holland's open practice. I believe England have one of those soon (today?), let's hope there's nothing similar.

Which games are we all looking forward to this weekend?

Saturday sees our Agger take on the dutch, and then it's Germany v Portugal, which should be a great game.

Sunday gives us our first look at the favourite, Spain, with a tough game against the (so-far) underperforming Italians. Should be a good acid-test for both sides.

Then on monday its us v the French, which will be our toughest game (possibly of the competition). Let's hope for anything other than a listless draw! <ok>

Holland suffer racist abuse at an open training session. This tournament could be a disaster.

What happens if a ref abandons it ? Platini is saying clubs cant be blamed for their fans (so im guessing countries cant). If that's true then you cant give a default 3-0 to the offended team. It's not like a season where you can play the game a few months down the line.

Platini has opened up a whole clusterfuck here I think.

What people tend to forget is that Platini is half-moron which goes hand in hand with top footballer. I think it will happen due to everyone being so keen to hear it.

Man scratches under his arm due to itch, he is making a monkey jesture! You can kind of feel that type of thinking is already there, some of it probably is there but I can also see some guy just doing a jesture that is similar, saying something like , " No man, I ****ing hate black current" as well.

Ah well, here is for some good footy. Got Poland topping the group so hope they thrash Greece with a Russian win.
