weighty, to be fair it wasn't a swipe at you mate. guru has spent the past 24 hours telling us how he'd rather have jewell than hughton <ok>

having said that, anyone who thinks he was 'average' at birmingham last season clearly hasn't looked at the turmoil at that club. to get that group of freebies anywhere near the top of the league, having played that many european and cup games, and all that traveling, really deserves more acclaim. also at newcastle, a similar situation - they were looking like becoming the next leeds when they went down. he steadied the ship and got good players with big egos to play for him and they romped the division. west ham arguably had a similar quality squad last season and only sneaked up through the play offs. i know you're ipswich fans and feel you probably have to dislike any manager of norwich but you're having your judgement clouded slightly by looking for negatives in a managerial career full of positives

Well it is, employing any new manager you would hope that he will better the team, in the view of the supporters. yes its a move up for him, but sometimes the position and the aura around the club makes it a no win job.

Take for example, 10 games into the season if you are in the hovering in the bottom 5 (this is realistic) the supporters will questions Who-ton's decisions against what they think Lambert would have done, even though Lambert probably got lucky on more than a few occasions. and the tide will turn.

Most if not all Town fans have said, that has the potential to be a good manager, but you have obviously focused on the negative side of the arguements, because you hate anything bad said about norwich. I have not heard one single Norwich say, yes he has the potential to be good given time to settle in, its just been automatic oh he will definately take us to the next level.

Once again you take part of my arguement, Supers, If Norwich started to sell sugered ****, you would say its the best tasting thing in the world. your just not objective about anything norwich.

how is it a no-win situation though?

we are 4th favourites to go down with the bookies. we were 3rd favourites last week when lambert was in charge! all we have to do next year is stay up and we'll be a debt-free club in the premier league. that will be deemed massive progress. we only have to finish 17th next year for it to be successful (sad as that may sound, its true). and what is all this luck we got?!?! there was a league table done where they show where we'd be if wrong decisions had been corrected and we were 12th on the same number of points!

if he does well then he'll have built upon lambert's foundations. its a tougher league on paper next season - none of our fans are deluded enough to think we will improve on our league position. not one has said we will progress to the next level next season under hughton - we wouldn't even have expected that under lambert. its not impossible but anywhere between 12th and 17th will still be looked upon as a good result next year - then we can build from there.

I think given time he could prove to be a very good manager but i'm sure you'll agree PL is a hard act to follow and i don't think that you will step up a level but i think if he can avoid relegation and is backed then it could work out........i could be wrong......it has been known.

Would you rather have Hughton or Lambert?????????

he's a very hard act to follow, thats for sure. we have to wait and see how we go this season. i'm extremely confident that we'll keep our heads above water once again, and that's all we can ask at this time. he's certainly easier to understand in his press conferences <laugh>

But the problem is that in the eyes of the supporters, the ones that hold the real power, to justify himself, Who-ton will have to better what Lambert done. It doesn't matter what the bookies say, its the natural instinct of the football fan. If he doesn't better what Lambert done, then they will start to question him and his decisions. Is it that hard to work out!

no he won't, i disagree. in the long term yes, thats only natural but not next season! you seem to think we're all deluded!! we aren't - we all know where we stand and survival for the foreseeable future is the aim. anything more and its great but survival is the key. as i say, its a tougher division on paper than last year. we've got a good side though, better than you probably give credit for, and with five or six better additions we should have enough about us to fend off the relegation threat which will no doubt hang over our heads until about april, just as it will two thirds of the division.

just to add, i'm starting to feel a bit sorry for lambert at villa. because we've (somehow) managed to hang on to culverhouse and karsa, lambert's backroom staff consists of peter grant and glenn roeder! <yikes>

    that should be interesting...........

I said at that time, when a club needs rebuilding after a nightmare reign by the darklord, A manager with the experience of Jewell was a better bet then a manager with potential like Who-ton. And i liken your situation, that at this time where you had a remarkable first season, that probably for the next couple of seasons you would be better with a more experienced head.

And still at this time for MY club, i would still prefer Jewell because i don't believe Who-ton has done anything remarkable as amanager. He has taken a side which was far too good for the championship up, and couldn't get the side that won the seasons before carling promoted. hardly great is it!

    ok...

you didn't say that at all. you never quantified anything. do i need to get the quote again...?

also, your lack of knowledge of both newcastle and birmingham's situations are startling.

Nice to know the slave trade is still going well up in Norfolk. why don't you lot lock them in the broom cupboard at the end of the day to stop them from escaping!

Over the years he has proved he can get sides promoted, whether he can still do it is up for debate. But at the very least he can steady a sinking ship. Whether Who-ton can do that the same is still up for question!

But this exactly what us Town fans have been saying about Who-ton being unproven, you yourself have said that anything above 17th is successful. please explain what experience he has of managing a side that is expected to struggle? he may do well, he may not be able to hack it in that situation, who knows, nobody because he is unproven!

<laugh> so jewell's promotions 10+ years ago are valid but hughton's recent one isn't??? he spent a fortune on players at bradford and wigan! had brum not played so many games last year its arguable he'd have got them up which would have meant two promotions out of two attempts. i'd be more wary of a manager who has had truly terrible times than one who has generally only had successes. your argument is fatally flawed
