    Paul Warburton re DJ Campbell

    Paul Warburton/Chronicle

Striker set for showdown talks over QPR future

DJ CAMPBELL is set for showdown talks at QPR to find out whether he has a future with the club.
    Buy Running Equipment

The striker suffered a series of injuries during the last campaign that relegated him to a mere two starts and nine sub appearances since joining in summer 2011.

More worryingly, the Hammersmith-born player, a Rangers fan all his life, knows he is down the pecking order behind Djibril Cissé and Bobby Zamora.

Early indications are boss Mark Hughes would like to keep Campbell as back-up, but the 30-year-old is only too aware time is running out to make a bigger impact in the top flight.

A source close to Campbell said: “In an ideal world, DJ would get a lot more chances next season with his injuries now behind him.

“But in football’s world that’s not how it works. No-one in his position wants to hang around a bench playing a bit part.”

Ironically, Campbell was the only player previous chairman Flavio Briatore was willing to buy after QPR returned to the Premier League.

Although Jay Bothroyd also joined Rs under Neil Warnock – the former Cardiff City striker was a free transfer unlike the £1.2million Briatore had to pay Blackpool for Campbell.

The source added: “If it’s not to be QPR – there are a few clubs out there who would jump at the chance of signing a striker who scored 13 Premier League goals in the previous season with Blackpool.” Fulham Chronicle

Think Hughes is right to keep him on the books. We just haven't seen the best of him, what with the virus and then looking a lot less than match fit when he played eventually.

If he wants to be a guaranteed starter he will have to drop a division.

Still dining out on those goals! .... I have consistently said this player is in fact NOT good enough for our team ... IMO he is a hider

He's not good enough sadly, he can't help it. Might get a kick with West Ham, Reading, Southampton, Norwich though. Good if we could use him, SWP, Betty as collateral in transfers, but I suppose that's asking for too much.

Just saw your post DT, spot on.

Depends who we have lined up really, if we need to keep either Jay or DJ as back up, I'd probably go for DJ though a very close call but I'd prefer replace both.

If we are keeping HH he is natural back up for Zamora. Can always push Mackie or Adel further forward as back up for Cisse.

Id honestly like to see him get a chance and a few games under his belt...Id keep him in the squad and see how pre-season goes personally.

Oh no watch out he could end up at Reading like the rest! Hope not but he hasn't really featured in MH plans. I say ship him out to France where he can do us no harm.

To be perfectly honest, I would get shot of Bothroyd - too lazy and we might make a profit on him. I would get shot of DJ too - he's pretty agile and would fit in well with a similar size club that was more gung-ho (hence he did well at Blackpool) maybe Southampton but just doesn't seem industrious enough to fit in with our playing style.

I'd keep HH as main back up and try to bring through Balanta (get him training with the first team rather than loan him out all the time) if we don't get anyone else in.

Mackie or Tarbs as additional cover as a second forward.

I think MH will want to get in a new striker before he unloads DJ. If HH is fit again and we have BZ, I don't really see even back up need for Betty.

agree matt i'd ship bothroyd & keep dj but if he would just be on subs bench most of time unless we get injuries which i don't think will suit him.

Mackie could cover the roll but not Adel. Adel doesn't have the instinct to get into the box and is definitely not quick enough to get on the end of crosses or stay with break aways, not his talents not where he should be played imo.

I'd still prefer to have another Striker and another Forward to create competition for the positions and preferably up and coming players. Can't rely on Cisse to score the majority of our goals need options.

if we'd get a fully fit HH for next season, he'd be my first option to partner Cisse, and we'd have BZ as back up. But we'll definately get a striker in during summer, if not Giroud, then someone that has not been in any rumours, and won't be before signing...

He'll be leaving, & getting replaced by Andy Johnson is what I'm hearing.

heard that DJ is not in MH future plans, but AJ would be only a squad player too, if he's signed on free. Expecting someone from continent to come in
