As it's close season and there's not too much to talk about beyond Hughton becomning manager I thought it would just be a bit of fun to see what footballers the posters on here have met away from the pitch! I have met Abbey, McVeigh and Notman at a Q and A. I have also met Bryan Gunn at a five-a-side game his son was playing in (he was playing outfield). I have also met all time top scorer for Col Who (although that really isn't hard) Martyn King at my local cafe and (although I didn't met him there) McVeigh has visited my local cafe as well, as I discovered on twitter the other day! Tom Adeyemi was also a student in the same year at my 'rival' school.
Met Holt, Hoolahan, Fox and Chrissy Martin at the Norfolk show a few years back but manage to never see anyfootballers while out and about.
Not met too many but Mokoena (?) and Primus of Portsmouth and in terms of Norwich players Hucks, Gunn and Fleming. My biggest claim to fame was I played against Dan Gosling the Newcastle player and saved his penalty
Seen Russell Martin and his pregnant wife in Sainsburys and Robert Green with his missus in Comet... oh and Mark Watson outside the ground at a match (technically not a footballer but still a bloody funny comedian and half famous so to speak!)
Met malky twice, he's a really nice guy, went to first school with Jed steer, was in his sisters year. I also was in the year above Adeyemi at school, I assume that makes us rivals wonky.
i met trevor putney once when i played for fakenham youth team. Nigel worthington came into my work just after he was sacked and talked to me for about 30mins! was a nice guy. and steve gobles in wells
I have met a few at Gillingham but not many will you know but I will say the main ones you will know, I have met Andy Hessenthaler who was manager, Nicky Southall Ex player, Matt Jarvis 5 or 6 years ago, got his autograph, worth a lot more now, Simeon Jackson obviously you will know him and also Danny Kedwell simply as he is a friend so of course I would have met him.
I've known McVeigh for years, from when he was a youngster on Spurs books as he was best mates with one of my best mates from uni and he used to come out on the piss with us a lot. Top, top fella, he played a cameo in our annual end of season 'Old Boys' game one year and was different class, he scored an outrageous overhead kick from just inside the box that was unbelievable - and everyone on the pitch just stood there and clapped. That was a great day! I was obviously well chuffed when he signed for us all those years ago and got a few complimentary tickets for quite a few games from him and entry to the player's lounge and had a couple of cracking nights out on Riverside with the first team squad during the promotion season of 2002/3. I had some drunken conversations with Iwan, Malky, Philly Mulryne, Darel Russell, Gary Holt and Alex Notman that night - Notman was absolutely ****-faced in the vip room of Time (as it was then), falling off tables and all sorts. No wonder he was always bloody injured I met Steve Bruce a couple of times back in the 80's as well, once when I was mascot and once at his Soccer School during the summer holidays. Great memories
i met gerrard in mcdonalds, met crouch at a party, where one of my friends didnt know who he was and when he hit on her she shouted 'get off my you lanky freak'! Met duncan ferguson ages ago, he slept with a girl i knew whose life ambition was to be a WAG. classy guy that he was he left while she was asleep and put a 10quid note AND assorted change on the sidetable for her. classy.
I was once in a hotel bar on the beach in Durban complaining to my work-mate that I was having all kinds of trouble with the hotel phones trying to get through to my wife at home in Norwich. The guy sitting on the bar stool next to me said are you from Norwich? When I said yes he said I used to play football for them. Turned out it was Colin Shaw. A player from the 60's. Also many years ago in Spain a guy finding out I was from Norwich said to me "I married Tommy Bryceland" he was a priest. Not a footballer but an interesting link.
met lots but the one who will last with me forever was being stared at by eric cantona. AMAZING and a bit scary too
I can 'out scare' that Supers! I was in a club in Norwich some time in the late 90's (it might have been the old Peppermint Park, but it might have been somewhere else) with some mates, sat at a table when these three black guys walked past and I just happened to look up and catch one of their eyes. This fella stopped, turned around and stared straight at me in a menacing kind of "what the **** are you looking at " look. It took me about a second and a half to realise that it was Herbie Hide and I'd probably be best looking somewhere else - anywhere else!! - pretty damn sharpish! Which I did, he walked on an my heart rate gradually slowed down! He's one fella you don't want to be messing with!
Sat next to Geoff Hurst on a train from Peterborough to Leeds, he gave me that look if you bloody ask me about the World Cup! so I just said good morning. Met Dion and the whole Norwich Squad at Norwich Airport, he was standing behind me while I was having to eat some of my childs babyfood to proove it was not a bomb lol! he thought it was hilarious, great guy!
I used to play for Northampton's centre of excellence a few years ago and Marco Gabbiadini was my coach, the ex Sunderland and Derby player. Was always lingering in the lower leagues, but his son is a brilliant player. Think he has a youth contract somewhere like Derby. I've met Delia Smith a few times, one occasion her and Michael Wynn Jones were eating at TGI Fridays in Northampton after a League Cup game.
Years ago I was on a football fun week thing, and one of the days involved going to Colney training ground to have a kick about. Basically I met most of the team from the mid-90s era plus had my picture taken with Gunn.
Forgot I also met Darel Russel during his first spell at the club. Discovered that for him to keep his hairstyle he had to travel down to London on a fairly regular basis. Also used to deliver papers to either Drurys house or down his road. Also, saw McVeigh AGAIN at my schools house music competition where he was a judge as he's apparently quite keen on his music (not that R n B crap). Got v jealous that my friends, both house captains, got to shake his hand and I didn't when we won the competition. But I shook one of my mates hands shortly after. So by the process o matter I've shaken his hand!
i've met herbie on one occasion at an awards dinner - to be fair to him he was ok that night but he was quite early in his career then - way before he went off the rails!
i once met the entire arsenal ladies football team and me and my mate went round trying to pull each one... got nowhere i'm ashamed to say! a couple of them were very tidy looking
Some of the women footballers are proper butch, my sister used to play for Rushden & Diamonds girls youth academy, I remember watching one of her games against Norwich and there was an absolute unit in the team she must have been about 6 foot 2 at 15 years old, it was pretty odd to be honest. Not that I'm suggesting you like butch women Supers haha, there probably are some lookers amongst them just an observation on the non lookers haha
