I have to say that's the most pathetic piece of "humour" I've ever come across. Almost certainly written by a Yank.

Having a go at one of the best Generals to ever have led men into battle and who had taken over practically the entire Continent of Europe.

N22, are you a little bit simple?

Obviously not clever enough for you swords - and well done for spotting it was an American joke, no flies on you

Apologies to him, you're right he's too bright to get himself labelled, but like most people who start on the extreme end of anything and work the other way, he's now as right wing as he was left wing a few years ago. Both extremes are just excuses for knee jerk thinking. His brother wasn't immune from this either to be fair.

Only messing mate. I just hate American Imperialism. (Imperialism root and branch in fact, including Napoleon's).

Good one to wind Oddball up with though! <ok>

Your question at the end was a bit unnecessary, Swords. Best to tackle the ball and not the man. That said, I agree that the piece itself appears to have been written by an ignorant American. He/she conveniently omits the Battle of Hastings for starters. The suggestion that WW1 was only won by the intervention of the Yanks is a little disingeneous too, given the appalling loss of life all round.

You're right, it was. N22 is a very good poster on this blog.

The Yanks (not all of them - the right wing half of the population) are so clueless it beggars belief. To say they gallantly came to France's aid in WW2 is perverse. They refused to join the war (as was their right) until they were attacked themselves and Hitler declared war on them. Otherwise they didn't give two fu*ks about France.

Their treatment of the Native American was truly deplorable and their war history since then has been one of shameful bullying and exploitation. If they were a little bit more like the French, the World would be a much better place.

I'm not so sure that Peter Hitchens is guilty of 'knee-jerk thinking'. He has remained pretty consistent in his stance on most issues and seldom calls for knee-jerk responses to certain events. His position in respect of our intervention in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya is a good example.

I agree with all of that, Swords, apart from labelling 'clueless' only the right-wing half of the US population. We shouldn't fall into the trap of believing that only the so-called right-wing (of any nation) has the monopoly on manipulating the truth for their own nefarious ends. Politicians of all colours have been playing that trick for many, many years.

No Swords, anything but. 22's a gent just like his (and our) mate Woody. Reckon you know all that anyway.

To All (and newbies in particular): re. Swords. His MO is this. He's a wum but infinitely harmless. Can't resist an opportunity to put someone on the back foot with an off-the-cuff, no holds barred comment or observation. A lot of our posters love him for his apparently insensitive audacity.

I picture him posting a response and sitting back pissing himself laughing - and/or shouting to his dad, 'will ye come and have a look at this one I wrote?!'. He's dying to see your reply, to which he inevitably apologises and bigs you up.

All you have to do is **** him off a bit and all in the garden suddenly blossoms!

He's a controversial sausage, our Swordsie. Goes bang in the pan but eats well thereafter.

    Am I right Swords?

Quite right Uber. Duly noted. That was my poor attempt to show that I wasn't characterizing the entire Nation lest I be accused of some sort of racism or other.

With regard to the Hitchens brothers. That Clan certainly had brains.

This thread's made for some excellent commentary by some of the stars on here - and a thoroughly absorbing read. Cheers guys. I won't add fuel to the fire. It's got a nice warming glow that'll carry as it is for a good while yet!

God, you missed your vocation Brix. Ever thought of doing some on-line Psychiatric evaluation work?

My Old Man doesnae live with me though, he doesn't do cuddles quite like herself :emoticon-0111-blush.

I think COL is at the end of his tether. I may have pushed him over the edge yesterday.

Quite relieved to read that Brixton. In the short time I've been on here Swords and I had a wee contre temps and it was all lovely in the end. Now, slagging off America is easy - after all Arnie became Governor of one of the biggest economies on Earth - it begs to be teased. BUT never forget what America did for Europe both during and after the 2nd world war. The Marshall Plan et al physically and economically had a massive part in rebuilding this continent. There.. had a drink -gone for it. Hope Col is ok

There's only one way to find out!

Are the other teams boards like this one ( I don't look at them too often)? I love this - we go all over the place, with informed discussion, strong opinions, a laugh and genuine freedom of thought and speech. Left Bank of the Seine after the War? 5th century BC Athens? Look no further than the QPR Not606 board for the modern equivalent. Be good for a few people with stereotypical views of football supporters to read some of this...
