I also don't get the old '60 years on the throne, that's some achievment'. What's she done? Stayed alive with the best health care in the world whilst those who pay for her care lie in hospital corridors.
Whatever anyone thinks of the other royals, the Queen is respected throughout the world by people in the know.
Nonsense. France gets far more tourists than Britain and they loped their Royals heads off centuries ago. Tourists come to see the palaces and what not, they would be able to see the whole lot if no one lived in them.
The thing is though Ciaran, would they want to see the royal abodes if the royals were not in them? This question is a catch 22.
Which is why we have yanks and europeans by the bucket load over for the jubilee, and did for the wedding too? More people visit France because it's warmer and because Paris is nicer than London.
Admittedly Beirut is probably nicer than London. London is probably the biggest ****hole i've ever been to, even more so than Plymouth, which i found rather shocking.
Yes. Look at all the tourists who come to Edinburgh and visit the Royal Yacht, Holyrood Palace and the Castle without a single royal in residence.
I've been to both London and Edinburgh in the last year or so. No special events in either, but even though I was in the former in midweek and the latter at weekend, London pissed all over Edinburgh in terms of tourists. The crowds outside Buckingham Palace were ridiculous. I like Edinburgh, but it's small fry compared to London.
And there would probably be more if said tourists were allowed inside. I think you missed STs point anyway.
I believe ST's point was thus: "The Royals have no affect on tourism, because Edinburgh does just as well as London and there are no Royals there". Which I don't agree with.
Then you are completely missing the point. I wasn't comparing Edinburgh to London (why would I?). I was countering Ye Olde's point that there wouldn't be as many tourists if the Royal residences were empty. Edinburgh, which doubles its population every summer due to the number of tourists, is a good example of tourists coming to see the history, architecture etc. rather than having the chance of spotting a Royal passing a window. Your "London pisses all over Edinburgh" is little more than a little Englander engaging in "my dick is bigger than yours" nonsense.
I think Edinburgh would have even more tourists if there was a Royal Family there. Then it could be compared to London. I wasn't going for the little Englander approach anyway. Maybe my choice of words was a little unfortunate.
