So... not the "best supporters" at all then, are they? Just the "best behaved". What a stupid conflation of totally different things. I'd take our fans any day over that bunch of bizarrely-attired attention-seekers, even if we do get a rough deal from the Police and other fans which leads to more arrests. Fuck off Norwich City FC, you clearly understand nothing about what it means to be a 'good fan', as you imply with that stupid web article.
In all honesty, Leeds United's support is just fantastic. I have yet to see a club whose support comes close. The only club whose support seemed passionate that I experienced was Newcastle at an away game against Coventry at Highfield Road. To be fair though they won 5-1 with Shearer getting a hat-trick, so the Geordies were delirious.
Now that is what I call an over reaction to nothing Why does it bother you so much anyway? If you want to believe you are the best supporters then do so, you don't have to mouth off and go some way to proving you are not
It's not an overreaction to nothing though. It's NCFC subtly saying that being a good fan equates to not getting arrested. It bothers me because I think it's stupid that the FA/PL's obsession with 'cleaning up the game' with the pointless 'fair play' prizes is now spreading to clubs, which will in turn spread to fans. Modern football at its most tedious. Epitomized by Norwich. And I've never claimed we're the best fans - I think there's a few clubs above us in that department, but we're certainly right up there.
We could probably argue the toss all night as you are using the word good in one context, the website it using it in a different context. You have read the website and created a different context to it in your mind and had a right good old rant about it Honestly, it's nothing, it means very little even to us. We know we are well behaved fans, and we are also good fans in the context you are using. These kind of things are only printed as a corporate image stunt - us fans don't actually go out and celebrate it
The c u n t s limited our allocation for the FA cup cos of our "high risk army"... carrow road is a glorified tea dance..
Says more about your fans not being so great I would suggest. Great in numbers I cannot disagree with but not great in their conduct on their travels I believe we did the same for Leicester City this season but I have no idea why, there has never been any history of problems with them.
I'm glad. But still, I'd be embarrassed if LUFC had put that on our website. And I'm not trying to change any contexts, it's NCFC who've done that with the first line of the article, deliberately and cynically putting 'best' and leaving out the 'behaved'. I get that it's meant to be a light-hearted two-fingers to the doubters and all that, but still, it's a desperate and slightly cringeable straw to clutch at. Worse than Stoke's 'noise-o-meter' stats that apparently made them the best supporters the universe has ever seen, I'd say.
Not going to disagree, because I can't for the reason stated earlier - it's purely a corporate thing that the club will try to use to attract sponsorship etc. To that end it is perhaps not as cringe-worthy, if it helps with more money coming in to the club, no matter how pathetic it appears on the outside
Our official website's constant barrage of advertisement driven articles - FlamingoLand anyone? - is so much for us to be proud of eh?
Sorry Jerel, what you mean is you sit around masturbating at our club having the "best fans in the land" as defined in numbers of fans that go to away games outsider the Prem or the highest attendances in the third division? I don't like arrogance at any level, but to carp on about a club wanting to say something good about their fans is just bad form. Our club seems to specialise in jst slagging us off. Anyone see the comments by Roy Hodgson about racism and hiow it should be up to UEFA and referees to deal with, nothing to do with players, clubs or managers? What a ****er. The best placed people to deal are those who are role models, not bloody bureaucrats and people that the world looks forward to criticising at the drop of a hat. It will only ever be resolved if those who everyone takes notice of take control. And if UEFA tell referees to do somehting, we all know they wll back off when they actually do stop a match, and the managers and players and media will be the first to whinge and complain. ****ing bunch of Pontious Pilates
All part of the current culture that it is someone elses' fault. David Bernstein stated earlier this week that it is his understanding that referees will be given the power to deal with racism issues during games at the Euros. This is going to be very interesting to see.
Jonny You know as well as I do that every year we have new stipulations on referees that they must stop this or that, and they must come down hard on the other, and then when they do it, they get slated and told they did it at the wrong time or it was too heavy handed when it was actually exactly as they had been told to do it. This is just Hodgson abdicating any responsibility. The responsibility has always been with referees to deal with racism on the pitch if they hear it between players or coaches etc. If the referee feels there is something bad going on from the stands, there has always been the tacit understanding they can take the players off the pitch for their safety. But you can just imagine it. Team A is losing 5-0, 45 minutes to go. Its fans start vicious racism chanting, and the standard response is to end the game. Only 45 minutes gone. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. And UEFA would never sanction the result standing. The stand should be made by the team against whom the chanting is done. That stand has two options: come out and annihalate the opposition 10-0, or make an official complaint to the UEFA rep in the presence of the referee there and then and be given the authority not to come out for the second half. This is a nightmare scenario for the referee. He is not trying to be famous. He is not trying to be seen. But he will be forced into the limelight here.
Yep, agree 100%. As I understood it, the directive to the referees is with respect to crowd behaviour but it may have extended to on the field too.
You should try an Old Firm match Billy. Ive been to a few, most recent about six weeks back. Unbeatable atmosphere
Can't argue with that. Although Norwich's announcement wasn't specifically a corporate invitation as Thai said, otherwise it would have been emailed to relevant sponsors, whereas our Flamingo Land cringefests appear to be contractual obligations to our theme park backers. 666, I've got far better things to masturbate over. Seriously. There's a reason I've consistently praised our away numbers and home efforts despite Ken Bates, and that's the loyalty of Leeds' hardcore fans, a loyalty you'd be hard-pushed to find at many other clubs our size. But I don't think we're the best at all. Off the top of my head, I'd reluctantly say Palace, Stanley and Millwall are better. And it does pain me to say that, since Leeds should be number one. Most importantly, this thread wasn't about numbers at all, it was about spirit and attitude. Now I'm not attacking Norwich's website for the fact they've been positive about their fans, it's because of the needless conflation I described above. Id est the whole 'well behaved' frenzy which is sweeping football, and gets used to mean something totally different from 'non-violent'. I'd use the word 'subordinate' or 'supine' in its place if the article were my editorial. You can get arrested for just standing up and singing these days; to achieve top place in the fans' 'fair play' list takes a special kind of spinelessness. Good if you're involved with the stupid and tedious politico-social niggling. In terms of an actual footballing rivalry, I'd say it's about equivalent to Sparta Prague vs Slavia.
