    Saints fan in peace,
How do you rate the fella?
When he was with us a few years back we were all very impressed but I see he's been released today!

He has been brilliant every time he has played this season. Was offered a contract but turned it down as he was not assured first team football. Would be a brilliant signing for you.

Saying hes been brilliant every time hes played is massive over statement.

Guthrie is a capable premier league midfielder who did a job when called upon this season, he had some very good games, some decent games and some poor games, I think he can improve with a permanent spot in someones midfield and I think he would be ideal for any newly promoted team because to be honest, hes probably good enough to play at any team outside the top 8 on his day.

My main gripe with him was how his head would drop in a game that we were losing, he would be virtually non existant, I'm not sure if thats a confidence thing or just coincidence but he only seems to thrive when the team is playing well or in a winning position, he seems disinterested when we were having a bad team game or we went down.

In summary though, if he can stay fit (which has been an issue) and be a regular somewhere, he will shine and improve, but already a very capable premier league midfielder.

Always been hit and miss for me, but really seemed to up his game when he played this year. Would be capable in a low to midtable team, but very injury prone so you're never sure how many games you'd get out of him. Best of luck to him though, no issues at all with a player leaving to play first team football.

I think he's improving, a good midfielder and fair play, he wants to play games. Would be an excellent signing for Southampton I think, he's exactly the sort of player they should be looking at signing if they are to strengthen.

Not amazing, but just a good midfielder. Would be a cracking signing for anyone from mid-table down.

    Decent player.

Reminds me a bit of Danny Murphy, struggles to hold down a regular place in a top half team, but could really shine at a club like Fulham, WBA where the expectations aren't as high but they are quite safe in the Prem.

Sad to see the lad go, but he deserves more than spot on the bench, and is more than worthy of a starting spot in a solid Premier League team. Really hope he goes on to have a great career and that he gets a warm reception when he returns to Newcastle in future seasons!

I disagree with some of the comments here. I watched him several times from the stands and I always thought he gave 100% whenever he played even when games weren't going our way. I hope he goes to a decent club and plays regular football.

Being greedy I'd love him to stay. He'll never be first choice with Tiote and Cabaye around but good cover and in my mind played very well when we lost Tiote to african nations. Been a good servant and would be a good buy. I'd wish him well. He isn't going to stay but from a squad point of view thats our loss.

In terms of performances he's definitely been the most consistent CM in the team. He hasn't got as got as much creative quaity as Cabaye or holding/defensive quality as Tiote.

But what is good about him is that he can do the creative and holding role. He's got good vision, good at short and long passing, he can whip in a half decent cross, and he's also got good agility and reactions on the ball and can keep a hold of it. He's not an immense tackler, but he holds onto the ball well.

He's very consistent if you give him frequent starts.

He's got a good game in him and with a long hard season in front of us we need people like him to come into the team and help out. He can give Cabaye a break to save him from burn out, just as others are going to need to be rotated to try and keep everybody reasonably fresh.

He will definitely be an asset to any club below top 6 and I will be sorry to see him go. Unfortunately Cabaye is a bit more creative and scores more and Tiote is a much better defencive midfielder. However, not many teams have a combination of these 2 in their teams.
    Best of luck Danny.

Good player if he retains the attitude of this season. Not set the world alight here and never really performed till this season. But he turned up slimmer and fitter this season and never let us down. I'd have been happy to keep him but he really needs to be playing first team football.

He would be a great signing for Saints. I don't want to see him in a villa or qpr shirt, hate those clubs.

Just wish Lolerpool tried to sign him back for £20mil when they had that crazy old man in charge
