Jarvis is a good player. In the right team, he would be very effective. There are always players in relegated teams that can play at the highest level - Defoe, Cole and Carrick spring to mind.

sorry YV, gotta disagree with that mate. Parker was always better than west ham and was playing at a club was below his ability. - a total one off, and someone who'd previously played for Chelsea at the highest level.

I don't mind matt Jarvis to be honest, but only as a squad player. The reason I'm so dismissive about signing those 3, is because they won't just be "squad players". we wouldn't bother signing any big names! - I know what we're like. The days of being linked to/signing players like that (in the least disrespectful way possible) have got to come to and end. Otherwise we will never progress.

I'd agree with that. That's the way I'd see Doyle, as well. If available at the right price, and are happy to be on the bench most of the time, maybe. Otherwise, I think we've got to be aiming higher than those two.

Big players will take time to be signed up as we need certain players to leave first so rather than starting the season without the players we need and whilst we're waiting until deadline day to get those final big players we may as well get the squad sorted so that we have more balance should we not manage to get the big players. Besides Doyle and Jarvis would be good quality additions, regardless of who else came in.

So Jarvis and Fletcher will be replacing two of the following squad players, Bentley, Dos Santos, Jenas, ?

but that's what concerns me YV. the "big signings" prove to be difficult as we a)don't want to pay the money and b)could be struggling on wages. so, as a result, we assemble a "good" new squad, but then just give up on the big players. what kind of impression does signing Doyle and Jarvis, give to the likes of modric, who is uncertain over his future anyway?

Gotta get the big names in now, IMO. (shifting the dead wood at the same time)

They don't really count since they never get games but we're missing cover on the wings and VDV's role which they'd fit, whilst players like those and Kranjcar who don't fit in are sold.

Anyway, it's unlikely to happen so I guess this conversation's a bit redundant.

but HD, those players moved on to other clubs, before the side you're referring to was relegated. their ability was proven prior to the relegation.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Defoe came to us after relegation (indeed was roundly criticised by Hammers fans for angling for a move within minutes of the relegation and finally achieved it in the next Jan window). Cole went as soon as they were relegated to Chelsea, despite being captain and Carrick gave them a whole season in the Championship but moved when they didn't come back up straight away.

One day the media will come round to the fact MUPLC don't have the money these days...

you're right, HD. my memory is atrocious. all i could picture was defoe in a pompey shirt, not west ham, and thought cole had left prior to that. total and utter comment fail<ok>

but on the point of "There are always players in relegated teams that can play at the highest level", do you feel that the 3 wolves players mentioned have the ability of those ex spammers players also mentioned? - I personally don't.

Fegie had better come waving a very large cheque, then. Personally, I don't think that they'd be prepared to pay what Levy will ask. I think he'll look elsewhere. Maybe even renew his interest in Sneijder.

yeah, agreed NSIS. - there was talk yesterday of sneijder looking to move on. apparently he's been injured for a lot of the season and is looking to make a switch. With chelsea looking like they are going to spend a bloody fortune again, united are going to need to make a few additions, as obviously city will anyway! It's going to be an interesting transfer window this season. Every club needs to think very carefully, especially us and the goons. - both sides are going to find CL qualification harder than ever, I feel. this summer is crucial, and early signings more so.

No, possibly not. That West Ham team must have been the best team ever to get relegated, given they had DiCanio, Kanoute as well as the other 3. I personally like the look of Jarvis, not keen on any of their other players personally but others may know more about Doyle and Fletcher. There is also another winger (forget his name) that had something about him.

see this is the the issue for me, jarvis is a pretty decent player, and i've been a bit harsh in my previous comments. he would make a good squad player for most clubs in the prem, including us as one of those. but is he better than what we have on the bench/deadwood, that doesn't get a look in as it is? I'm just being pretty blunt right now, because this is a typical tottenham "bargain basement" signing, when i think we need to be focussing on bringing in new players of the calibre of ade and rafa initially. it makes a statement to the players in the team who are thinking about leaving, as well as us fans who have been screaming out for these signings for 18 months. I've just adopted a bit of an attitude recently where it's all about the correct marquee signings, in order to TRY to compete with the likes of chelsea and city, who are obviously going to get stronger. now, we obviously can't pay the wages or the transfer fees, but we have to do something to compete. i just feel that this "bargain basement" isn't a competitive enough approach and sends out the wrong message at the moment, especially after missing out on CL football in such a cruel way.

I just want to see a couple of big names to start off with- a defender and a striker. Then we can look out for any other marquee signings we think we may need, at the same time as focussing on acquiring some squad players and shifting dead wood.

I think we're owed that sort of approach this summer. To be honest, if the vertonghen medical is true today, that's 1 of the 2 anyway, and if the Leandro reports of a bid are true, then i guess it's happy days, as we're trying.

just read a report from a crap source saying that internacional value leandro at 10mill euro's more than we're willing to pay, but apparently we've put together a deal to give Leandro 3mill euro's a year. my maths (calculator) works that out to be about £45-50k p.w. - not enough I feel. - seems like "stepping stone" money.

That would be £46,147 a week if it's exactly 3m Euros at the current exchange rate!

I'd be surprised if he would be happy with that, although playing in Brazil at the moment, £46k a week would almost certainly be a massive pay rise.

The Papers: Man Utd have £40m+ to buy Luka Modric
The Reality: Man Utd are offering £12m + £5m worth of add-ons for Shinji Kagawa

That won't stop "Modric to MUPLC" rumours, of course - but it will stop them bidding for him...
