Dai how can you possibly say that it's HJ's fault. I think everyone believed that BR would be with us for probably another season but much longer than that. Liverpool fans and owners will be demanding at least a top 6 place which will not be easy by any means - so I hope BR has made a wise personal choice.
Apologies I missed a word out! "I think everyone believed that BR would be with us for probably another season but NOT much longer than that."
I thought he would have done another season, then leave with our blessing. It's not as if the big jobs won't come up in another two years or so because they will.
There will be huge pressure on Brendan at the start of the season. He needs to get off to a flier. Whats the odds on the fixture list throwing up Swans v LFC as 1st game!
He stands or falls from a great height if he fails at Liverpool, even if we were to be relegated I believe his job would have been fairly safe ,up where they take no prisoners (sacking Dalglish proved that) could make or break him .As long as we finish above them next year I don't care what happens to him
He had a clause allowing him to walk out. That was public knowledge and he always said he would leave. So nothing wrong with that. SCFC didn't have to agree to that clause if they didn't want to, but they did. That's life. Move on.
But he has belief in himself and needs to try. People who are frightened to challenge themselves don't get anywhere in life. Better to try and fail than not try at all. You might like a safe, boring life, but others have more ambition. Swansea have tiny fan base, Liverpool have massive fan base. Swans have little money, Liverpool have lots. Swans won't play in Champions League, Liverpool might. Why would he turn down an offer like that? Because he's scared he might fail? Get real. Some people have more guts to give it a go. You might not, but Brendan does, and good luck to him. I hope they finish top 4 next season. Don't judge other people why your own low level of ambition.
Casual - nobody is saying he doesn't deserve a shot. What I'm saying is he could have stayed one more year and NO-ONE, to a man, would begrudge him going. As it stands, he could have completely shafted us. Now, we might not get Sigurdsson, we might appoint the wrong manager, and we might get relegated, none of which (I'm confident) would have happened had he stayed. If he is good enough next summer then he gets his move, and the Swans are an established PL team. Everyone knows you shouldn't limit your ambition, but what's the saying - "Keep your feet on the ground"?. His ego has allowed him to see past a lot of other factors in this, and after this debacle I say thanks for all the excellent work you've done and I'll always be grateful for that, but you're not the man I thought you were and good riddance. We don't want someone who'll rub your back with one hand while fondling your wife with the other, thank you very much!
, you've not got clue who I am what I do and what I want to do so leave out the personal jibes ,by the way I thought you said goodbye once
I think that sometimes you just have to take opportunities as they come up or they are lost forever. Sometimes the timing's not right, but it's difficult to time these things. For people with ambition they just want to get on with and don't see the point of waiting for another day. Obviously there's a bit of risk involved becuase he could be sacked by xmas, but that's life. Could have waited another year? Maybe, but he has to put himself first. It's easy to say another offer is bound to come along in a year or two, but they don't always. Maybe next year there will be a vacancy but maybe tougher competition for the job. So you never know. I understand what you're saying at our situation, especially with Sig, but I think people would have been saying the same thing if he left next year. They'd always want one more year. I think the Swans will be fine without him. You should have a bit more confidence in their abilities. Whether it was the right decision at the time, only time will tell. If Liverpool finish top 4 next season and we finish top half of the table it will have been the right decision. But all we can do now is speculate, and that is frowned up by many in this forum, so let's wait and see.
Apologies bonymaenjack. But I just got the impression from your comment that you rather go for safety. People like brendan would rather take a calculated risk with Liverpool rather than feel safe with Swansea. Not everyone wants to feel safe. Some want to test themselves, take risks, etc. It takes all sorts. So for Brendan this is the right decision. If he gets sacked in a few months I'm sure he'll still have plenty of job offers. I know so many people that have wasted their lives because the played it safe or the time wasn't right when life's opportunities came along. Some of them look back and think I wish i'd done this or wish I'd done that. But too late now. It seems quite tragic to me, so maybe that's why I think he's done the right thing. But no offence to you. Many people play it safe and that what makes them happy. So that is fine.
I do have confidence in our abilities, never doubt that. But as I've said, at 39 he WILL have other opportunities IF he is good enough. Staying at the Swans was more of a litmus test and I get the feeling he's gone for the payday because like you say "he may not get another opportunity". If that's the case, he's not good enough and he hasn't earned one, so stuff it! I know he has to put himself first, but there's ways of putting yourself first which don't leave a bitter taste in everyone's mouth.
But I think in life you have to take all opportunities. You can't keep skipping them and waiting for the next one. I doubt very much he's left just for the money. He must have confidence in his abilities to take a job like This at this time. He may be wrong about his abilities. I see what you're saying but I'm a firm believer in take all opportunities. Why ski any, as you never know where they will lead. Small changes in your life can make huge difference down the line. Maybe he'll excel at Liverpool for a couple of years and then end up at Man Utd. But if he waited until the next opportunity and it was 2-3 years away then he might miss a bigger opportunity like Man U. And that may never come around again if they keep the next one for 25 years. That's why I think you should never let opportunities pass and wait for another. In my life one thing has led to another. If I skipped the first opportunity, which most people told me to, then I would have missed all the other because they built on each other. But if I waited maybe I would have got a better one. But i don't know. I'm just so glad I didn't listen to the people who wanted to hold me back. These things aren't important to everyone, but I think for brendan they are.
