In years to come people will be perplexed at the framework of a monarchy.

Endorsed by god ...the rights of succession ...ultimate sovereign Head of State (in Canada and Australia???!) ...breeding by selection (and they're still thick) ...being beyond reproach and investigation ...institutional deference ...entitlement/privilege/land ownership/and a horde of scum sucking hangers on.

The monarchy is an outdated useless anachronism in present day society - there is no way it will last and ought to be disbanded.

Unfortunately, good PR and spin coupled with a fickle, gullible public will ensure we're stuck with them for a while yet.

Next up, some simpleton will try to convince us that we need the Royals to attract tourists.

I like the fact that our Head of State is non-political, a figurehead who is respected and recognised all over the world.

Heaven forbid that we get a President in the style of Bush or Sarkozy.

If the people were used to voting on Royalty, these people would have been given the short shift long ago. People are fickle. There is a chance that a footballer and a dumb ex singer might have had the job at one time.

Has anyone ever done a study on whether the Royal returns are more than the outlays?

The truth is tourists don't come to see the Royals, they come to see the palaces and castles etc. That's one of the reasons Edinburgh gets so many tourists yet how many royals live here?

    Is the CORRECT answer! <applause><applause><applause>

Disbanding the monarchy will not result in the instant deconstruction of Britain's historical legacies

You can have a President as head of state with the Prime Minister still the 'Premier' as they do in Ireland and Russia - two fine examples of modern forward thinking Democracies <ok>
